I think T.V. of today is just bad.I'm more into shows like All In The Family,Cheers,Night Court,Bizzar, and years back of Saturday morning cartoons back in the early 1980's,70's.That's just to name a few.So who agrees with me. Old t.v. or new t.v. if you had to pick.

Not me, shows like Bones, House, Dark Blue, Burn Notice, etc. are all awesome, I'd take them over older shows anyday.

I generally despise television, but a number of shows keep my interest. Futurama, The Simpsons and House being the main ones currently.

I'd take modern TV without hesitation. The 2000s have been by far the best decade for TV shows.

There are some really great shows on tv that I like to watch. However, I would say that 98% of what is on tv, I am not interested in. So, if I was to make a statement like yours, I would say, "Modern day tv has a ton of selection, but I don't like hardly any of it."

Some shows that are awesome:

  • Family Guy
  • The Simpsons
  • South Park
  • Most Shocking

Not at all. I grew up in the 80's and love many of today's shows. Dexter, The Soprano's, The Wire, Rescue Me, Mad Men, and on and on. None of these shows would have been made back then. You had 3, and soon 4 major networks who played different versions of the same cookie cutter stuff. Sure they had some great shows come out of it, but not near as many choices as we have today. You just have to wade thru more bad TV now.

I try not to watch TV because I always feel like I'm wasting time unless if I'm watching a film or a documentary that will provide me with knowledge that I'll utilize.

I strongly feel the same way about cartoons, but I'm about even when it comes to the usual primetime big name television series. I've never really watched that many primetime shows, so their quality seems about the same to me. I miss following a show religiously like I did with The X-Files lol.

The only thing I watch on TV these days is Top Gear, so I can't really comment. Although, the fact that I only watch one show may say something about the quality of others.

TV today is better, shows have better budgets and higher production values and the technique of screenwriting for television has been spit shined through the years. I would take Heroes, 24, Lost, and Battlestar Galactica over shows I used to watch, with the exception of The X-Files.

I hate modern day music television (MTV, VH1, etc...) but my favorite shows are modern (How I met Your Mother, True Blood, Dexter, Buffy, Bones, X-Files, etc...).

 Great post.

On topic, I have to say that I just can't go back to "old TV". I used to LOVE McGyver but recently went back and watched it...big mistake. Some shows hold up well (Hogan's Heroes for instance), but I've found that not all do. Plots, acting, production, budgets, etc. are all (generally speaking) better now.

Television is amazing right now, especially with channels like HBO, Showtime, and AMC. I personally enjoy TV shows more than films.

Contemporary dramas tend to be a lot more layered. I wouldn't give up Lost, The Wire, The Shield, Damages, The West Wing, Six Feet Under and so on for older shows, personally.

Ah... the sweet sound of misguided nostalgia... There is more TV on TV today than there were a few decades ago. That means that even though the ratio of good-bad stays the same percentage wise, the sheer numbers become a bit over-whelming. That doesn't mean that all there is out there is garbage. It just means that there's more garbage to wade through to find the good shows.

In the last decade of television, we had: Lost Rome Deadwood The Shield The Wire The Sopranos Battlestar Galactica reboot Veronica Mars Carnivale South Park's best years Breaking Bad Mad Men Avatar The Last Airbender Arrested Development Dexter Sure, there's Family Guy, the abndance of reality TV, the cancellation of Futurama and the decline of the Simpsons to bring it all down a notch, but in all honestly, in terms of abudance of high quality TV shows, there has never been a better decade than the 2000's.

It's not that TV today sucks. It's that sitcoms today SUCK. In the post-Seinfeld era we are left with unberable, cliche, predictable sitcoms with half ass, non developed characters. No contest that sitcoms today SUCK compared to stuff like All in the Family. Cosby Show, Seinfeld, Frasie, Happy Days. But dramas have improved. So I'd say there's good TV, just like the one guy said, with alot of content, comes alot of crap. Just ignore it. Sadly, America has settled for mediocre reality TV instead of well developed shows with complex characters but hope that changes in the 2010's. I do miss the days when you had shwows so big that the next morning you could ask any random person and they'd say yeah I watched last night. The last show to end where you could do that was ER which had massive ratings in the 90s. Today, no shwos command massive audiences like the 20th century except Idol but reality TV is garbage so that's embarrassing more than anything. So in conclusion, TV options today = GOOD Sitcoms today = GARBAGE.

I watch very little tv today due to most of the shows being boring.
