Neil Peart > Lars.
That said, I'm not completely convinced Peart is the best drummer. Also, Peter Chris? I'd rather have Zach Hill up there than Peter Chris.
Lars is considered to be Metallica's weak link. I mean I think he fits in but anybody that plays drums would probably think you're nuts for saying he is the best.Nifty_SharkObviously you don't listen to alot of Metallica. All of his rifts are pure gold...."One" and "Sanitarium" come into mind. But there are alot of other songs that are just as good.

I love his drumming on One and I love the sound of his drums on the Black album but for example in Fade to Black his drumming just doesn't do much for the song. Unlike many people I did also like how his snare sounded on St. Anger even if the album didn't turn out so good.

The snare made that album flat out unlistenable for me.

I should of switched it to "most". Every drummer has a bad rift, but Lars has made the best ones out there.[QUOTE="Lockedge"][QUOTE="Vilot_Hero"]Lars is definatly the best drummer out there, and will always be. Look at this insane drum solo.....

Of course, I think the best drummer ever is Buddy Rich. Best drummer alive? Couldn't say, but it might be peart, or Terry Bozzio if he's still alive. A bunch of other spring to mind. Not Lars though. Great drummer, but far from the best.
Mitch Mitchell and John Bohnam.
Also Dave Grohl is prettyfreakingawesome.

Yesss Avon, omg they are rereleasing the original QotSA album... remastered but at least its a reissue. Maybe there will be some new tracks and hopefully the remasters will be good quality.
EDIT: In terms of best drummer, Lars isn't that great, solid but nothing special. Peart is way more talented and if you hear a Rush album, you'll understand why. Bozzio is nuts too, he did play the black page, remember?
All drummers are the same. All they do is hit things.
Pretty shallow of me to say that, I mean, they do carry the rest of the band, but, drums are just to plain to me. But I still respect people like Peart, Chad Smith, ect

They could just release the old album with new packaging and I would probably buy it. :P

listen to Pearl Jam. The difference between Ten and Vs. is quite big (Abruzzeesse FTW by the way). Then hear Jack Irons on No Code. And Finally Cameron on any of the last 3 PJ albums.Very different drumming styles which is actually pretty cool.

that's what i try to look for. i mean in rock, everyone does 4/4, snare, highhat, and kick drum, drum fill, repeat, it just gets boring after a while (since i always pay attention to drums)[QUOTE="Nifty_Shark"][QUOTE="lonewolf604"]All drummers are the same. All they do is hit things.

Neil adds a little different variety, but it is not completely varied.

Lars is a good drummer, but I wouldn't have him top 20. That said, I tend to feel Jazz-influenced drummers display much better technique and variety in their play than metal drummers who are more known for speed and edginess.
Even IF Buddy Rich wasnt the best drummer ever, he was most definitely the most innovative, and top 3 in talent.
wheres joey jordison and danny carey?siinnThey're not that good dude. And that's why there's the "Other" option;)

Are we talking about the same person? Lars doesnt heavily focus on blazing fast drumming, but he does focus on solid, neat and clear drumming. Black metal drumming as dull and repetitive as it may get, requires certain ability to be played. I agree with Lockedge, as much as Ulrich's drumming may be full of complexity, Buddy Rich's ability and originality is way greater than his. Lars may have some great and unique fills, but Rich has a considerable amount of technique that shouldn't go unnoticed when listening to his drumming, he is a really underrated artist.

Show me a link of his so called "great" drumming. I would like to see this technique that is better than Lars(If it does exist). I will agree with the black metal part. It does require great amount of dexterity and speed.yeah lars is good but joeys drumming is more entertaining for me :)siinnFair enough I suppose. What music genre's do you listen to?
Just because he has a good drumset, doesn't mean he can play well with it.I went the a metallica concert last tuesday, andLars Ulrich did a pretty good damn job at drumbing
But I'd have to say Neil Peart is the best, I mean seriously, have you seen his drumset?

That's soo linear. No where near good. The drumset sounded nice though.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp_PJrPgpk8

Are we talking about the same person? Lars doesnt heavily focus on blazing fast drumming, but he does focus on solid, neat and clear drumming. Unlike those black metal bands and such.I didn't say Lars specifically was like that, I'm just saying I lean in favor of Jazzy drummers like Rich, Krupa, etc. rather than metal drummers, stylistically. Like I've said, lars is a great drummer, and yeah his sound is clear and he's crisp with his technique, but I haven't heard the same level of skill from him that I've heard from other drummers. Maybe he's handcuffed by Metallica's sound, but there are a handful of drummers from prog-rock that have done some phenomenal things with their sets. There are a lot of jazz drummers who are so incredible with pushing boundaries.
Is Lars an enjoyable drummer to listen to? Yeah, definitely. One of the most enjoyable? I don't know, but he's enjoyable enough. Is he the most talented drummer? No. I really don't think he is.
