I used it but not in the same context as the surfer "dude".
Like if you were referring to someone else.
I don't say "What's up dude"
But if someone has a gun, I would say "Dude gotta gun", or if someone is doing really good at something I'd say ""Damn, dude is serious!".Â
Usually it's used to refer to someone not in your presence that you have already established as the person you are talking about. That's how we use it generally in my neighborhood, or at least the people I talk to.

Wow, same thing around here. I'll say it in the context like "Dude's a great basketball player" but I won't say it in the context of "What's up dude"

I'm in Maryland, so the dialect probably doesn't differ too much from our locations. Especially if you live in the inner city. MD is funny though, because some parts are SO country and people sound southern, and other places, like Baltimore, Frederick and parts of Hagerstown, people act Northern to the bone. Probably why we couldn't make up our minds on the civil war on who to fight for, lol.
I'm just glad I wasn't brought up in a southern-like part.

It's mostly just northern here, I live in the city, and mostly everyone has that east coast talk. I love it though. East Coast> west, when it comes to hip-hop, style, etc.
