Mike Patton, Chris Cornell, Mikael Akerfeldt(sp?). I think Maynard Keenan and Cobain are overrated.

Maynard James Keenan - a wide emotional (and increasingly technical) pallette - and those loooonnng notes (see: 'Bottom', 'Eulogy', 'The Grudge').

Mike Patton - Has he released the opera record yet? If so, he'll have mastered pretty much every genre.

Bruce Dickinson: Speaking of opera...

Corey Glover - Sorta like Marvin Gaye with riffs.

Bruce Dickinson beats all the mentioned singers with ease. Just listen to the album 'Brave New World' ^^

Personally I like Axl Rose and Dave Mustaine a lot, but they aren't technically better than Bruce Dickinson.

Mike Patton- Crazy range of styles and languages

Chris Cornell- Alot of soul, range and ability

Mikeal Akerfedlt- Vocals ranging from melodic folk to death. He also plays incredibly complex guitar lines while singing.

I don't get why so many people get hung up on Maynard. He has no range and his flows repeat constantly. I heard the new Tool and either they've replaced him with a worse singer or he has gotten worse. Maybe people love the lyrical content but as a vocalist, he isn't very special.

Probably the same reason I don't get why people get hung up on Mikael Akerfeldt.  His guitar lines ain't all that complex, it's just a matter of tuning the guitar correctly.  The thing with Keenan is that his voice is very hard to replicate, and their music is complicated as all heck, so there aren't nearly as many Tool cover bands as there are Opeth or Alice In Chains, etc.

Tool has good basslines and drumming but like the vocals, the song formula repeats and repeates. Slow build to a climax. Opeth's vocals and songwriting are way beyond Tool's.

Whether or not the formula repeats is debatable, but Tool's songwriting is definitely beyond Opeth's.  None of it is written in the studio, it's composed beforehand, rather than jotted down in the studio.  From a strictly music theory point of view, Tool's music is far more complicated.  I guess I'll give you Mikael Akerfeldt's voice, although I ain't a big fan of it.

I disagree. Opeth's music is far less predictable and the songs go in far more directions than Tool's. Maybe you haven't heard much Opeth. I suggest listening to Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Still Life. Opeth incorporates many more styles and the songwriting is far less contrived. Opeth is also musically superior. Tool had nice bass and drums. Now the drummer is injured. Opeth's music is far more complex. One of Opeth's songs is more complex and goes more places than 5 or so Tool songs.

I have listened extensively to both Tool and Opeth.  I have all of their CD's.  Neither of them are all that amazing, but if you take both to a music theory major, they will tell you that Tool is much more musically interesting.  The way they screw around with meter and key is much more appealing than repeating phrases six times before moving on to a new one (this is not an attack on Opeth's skill.  Ghosts of Perdition is quite possibly one of the best songs they've done, and not subject to their usual treatment).  The thing with Tool is, most people pass it off as contrived, I used to myself, but they really aren't.  Personally, I don't give a damn about either of them anymore (well, sometimes I listen to The Pot), I've been listening to Aghora and Gordian Knot lately.  Much more interesting stuff.
