I'm gonna say Kepler because he was able to find the hidden patterns (that the planets move in ellipses) in data taken over many decades by astronomers.

I'd say da vinci, because being really good at one thing is common but being really good in many things like he was is unique
but since einstein found a lot of really strange hidden patterns so he might also be the smartest person in history
EDIT: WOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I'm the smartest person in history
Smartest in what terms? What defines smartness? There are too many fields for just one answer. Are we going to include who have the most diversified knowledge of the world? A sort of jack of all trades, master of all (if that can even exist)? Do we want to include savants who can remember and recall so many different things, but often have some social and constructive disadvantages? Are we talking about scientists, mathematicans, and engineers who have made the most breakthroughs? That doesn't define smartness, that just defines the drive, work ethic, and luck to make said breakthroughs. Or are we going to include politicians, lawyers, or historians who have made the greatest impact on society and history? That doesn't have to be the work of a smart person to say the least. Or are we going to include authors, artists, or philosophers? So much of that is too abstract to define and as a whole very subjective.
I'm sorry, but I don't know how to answer your question.
There was a blog on MSN about this today. Some famous people with very high IQs. According to that, Bill Gates has a very high IQ, and James Woods has an IQ of 180. Again, I can't say if that's accurate or not, but still. I would say da Vinci would be there somewhere, and perhaps Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
That question is impossible to answer, since all the "smartest" people in history are smart in different, unique ways, and perhaps there are people even smarter than them who never became famous or well-known.
[QUOTE="t3hrubikscube"]Bill Gates!!jetpower3
He sure was a smart businessman. Or do you say that because he is currently the richest man in the world?
I just really respect his intelligence and talent. I've read both of his books and I've read a lot about him, and I respect his abilities a lot. He didn't single-handedly revolutionize the computer or the personal computer, but he had a hell of an influence on the industry. Maybe I'm biased because I'm majoring in Computer Science and I look up to him, but I think he's brilliant in many ways.Easy Michio Kaku.

he's very smart but don't even think that he's the smartest person on earth at the moment
BTW I love watching the universe (I'm guessing you've seen michio kaku in the program the universe from history channel)

Is IQ really the best way to measure smartness? It is still based on a series of testing, which not everyone, including extremely smart people, is particularly good at, and it can thus be prone to distortion or manipulation.

Then whos smarter? Stephen Hawking? Ronald Mallet?

Is that an accurate statement in regards to this?
Impossible to determine really as how is 'smartest' determined?
but as everyone always puts physists at the peak, Einstein, Newton, Heisenberg, Pauli, Dirac, Feynman etc, but I personally think Leonard Euler deserve an honourable mention :)

Is that an accurate statement in regards to this?jetpower3He started programming back in the '60s at a very early age on very primitive computers, and he's been able to keep up with the times. By now I doubt he does much of anything with PCs since he has huge teams below him all over the world...plus, he's stepped down from his CEO position and is focusing more on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Back when he first started out, though, he worked very hard on the early stuff.
If Jesus was so smart why couldn't he figure out a way to absolve man of his sins without dying? I'm sure even Einstein could have thought of something.

maybe you should ask him :)
Can't believe I'm the first to say Einsten. If it's not Einstein, it's probably Stephen Hawking.KHAndAnime
Einstein had a very unique intellect at the very least, even if he is not considered the smartest by any objective measure.
In truth the question is not easy to answer, however I am inclined to say Newton simply because the ideas he came up with were so unbelievably groundbreaking and unprecedented for his time. For a man, with nothing but 17th century technology to successfully model the physical behavior of the macroscopic universe and independently create calculus is unbelievable. Nothing but an amazing mind could advance scientific knowledge so much in under a century.

*biased atheist alert, biased atheist alert* He was born like a lamb, he had the title of "The Lamb of God", he was sacrificed like a lamb. Its a lot more to it, and its alot to explain. And plus he is GOD! If he could have 5 loaves of bread and a couple of fish and he had to feed 5 thousand people hewould have to be smart. He wanted to show he would do anything for his children. Just defending myself from people who bash my beliefs. Im not bashing you beliefs.

Admittedly, I was being facetious. But its not really fair to call Jesus the smartest person since he was technically god, and that puts everyone else at a slight disadvantage.Cicero, Livy, and Tacitus are excellent answers. I absolutely love Cicero. Translating his works is a hard task, but it's so satisfying. He was a beautiful orator.t3hrubikscubeCicero was pretty politically savvy also. He organized his own rise from obscurity to power, and had remarkable foresight regarding how fragile the Roman Republic was. He stood in the way of some of the most powerful people in history. He used every trick in the book to negate that power, and ended up being killed for it.
Galileo. He confirmed that we revolve around the sun. Despite what the Catholic Church was feeding the masses.

Still, can you really call him the smartest person in history? Firstly, he never shows great intelligence in the Bible. He showed great compassion and leadership, but he wasn't doing differential equations in his head.
Secondly, he's God according to Christians. I don't think God is included in person.
