Why all the hate for nickelback?

I was wondering why all the hate for nickelback, one of my friends was listening to them today and everyone started making fun of him.

I admit that I'm not really a fan, but I do listen to one of their songs once in a blue moon. I don't like Soulja Boy, Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber but I don't throw rocks at them.

Anyway OT, what is your opinion on nickelback?

Their music is insipid, uninspired and monotonous. Apart from me not liking this kind of mainstream rock, I think they could at least try to introduce some variety to their music.

IMO, they are chick band in disguise (meaning they write song that specifically appeals to women). but no, you don't throw anything an anyone.

I hate them so I can be cool - the boring and repetitive music is just a coincidence.

I never understood how anyone could "hate" any song or artist...or composer. Then again, I'm a HUGE music fanboy with appreciation for everything.Symphonycometh

Really? You don't get at least mildly irritated at the fact that derivative music like this is so popular? I'm a music lover as well, but I sure as hell don't respect anything written for monetary or publicity purposes...

Yeah you make an excellent point actually. I don't really hate Nickelback, and I have nothing against the musicians personally, but their music is just so painfully basic and familiar. Their music is not really going anywhere, but indeed maybe that's not what they're going for. What they're doing now makes good money, why fix something that isn't broken? I think this is flawed though because music is not an industry it's an art form, and art is constantly moving forward. The mainstream is pinning itself down instead of progressing, which makes me just a little mad.

Cheers. :) Although despite all that I'm really not an elitist, I don't ever directly confront anyone about their musical tastes, but if someone asks me my opinion of something I see no reason to be blunt and direct and say what I feel, although I don't judge people about their musical preferences.

you're missing the point. the precise reason why they are so popular is because they are able to skillfully make rock music in its most boring, soporific form.

When you say boring and soporific, I assume you mean simple and uninspiring (since not even a "mainstream person" would buy a sleep-inducing rock album), which is mostly true, but they do know what their audience wants from them and that's not complex Radiohead-esque music.

Its a fad to hate Nickelback. Sure they aren't a good band but they aren't any worse than loads other bad bands out there. Its just that its become a thing to hate them.xTheExploited

It's generic, as it sounds like any other rock music today.

I thought I had found a somewhat new hope in Nickelback after hearing this song, but then I found out that it's their only song that sounds like that. Down with Nickelback, all of their songs sound the same etc etc. scorch-62

Yeah and the only reason it's good is cause they Dimebaged it up. I actually let that song play when it's on the radio.

Um... Radiohead don't write complex music, despite being a good band and indeed way better than Nickelback. Their music is mostly simple yet at least played with good intentions and with some soul. No one is saying a band has to be extremely complicated to be good, just something more than the boring perfect fifth chords; constant eighths struming. It's unimaginative and lazy. Nickelback know exactly what the mainstream audience wants, and they deliver. In that regard Nickelback are brilliant businessmen but not even close to deserving musical commendation.

Read their interview from playboy a few years back. They make an excellent point when they say the critics analyze their music more than they do. Radio friendly "catchy" tune music is their thing.
