Chinese primarily seem very good at maths, is it some sort of cultural thing? What do you think?

Practice and different studying methods. You can become just as well versed if you try. If you're weak at upper level math, then start at the basics and build yourself up.
it's nothing to do with race or genetics and everything to do with their culture. Asian cultures predominetly emphasize the importance of education, and they have a long history of pushing it. compare this to say africans, and you'll see a stark contrast.
and before someone screams racism, like i said before with asians seemingly so good at math. it's everything to do with their own cultures, nothing to do with their genetics. and cultures shift and mutate over time, priorities change.
Chinese parents tend to push their kids to do well in school more so than American parents.

it has nothing to do with the kids, and all to do with the parents.
they are smart because they are forced to be.
other then that they are different intellectually then anybody else.

It is fairly obvious that Asians are doing well when you have hundreds of thousands, if not millions, that are outscoring or matching the best of other cultures in say math.
but you do not need to be born in a white-collar family in order to be a rocket scientist, in fact you can come from a blue-collar coal mining family for their children to reach that. What it takes is persistence, and sacrifice on the part of the immediate family, and for that to be even supportable there has to be an immediate culture that places an importance on education.
I know at least a couple of guys who understood and did better then i in physics during high school, that now live their lives folding cardboard boxes at a local small factory. Meanwhile some guy like myself who struggled with it, has gone on to getting a bachelor and master's. and a large part of that came from my parents insistence that i keep going and keep shooting high. my friend never got there because his folks never pushed him or wanted it for him, they had other priorities and immediate needs. Now they languish working 7 days a week to make ends meet.
regardless if you are on top of the social food chain or not, it is much harder to raise yourself up and it can be even harder to maintain your position there. It is always much easier to fall.
i'll give one more example.
an ex-gf wants to be a doctor, she's 26, failed out of a Filipino med school, dropped out (taking a brunt of 4 F's at the end) in her undergrad school because her father wasn't willing to pay anymore. Now she's in the US looking for any college to take her, and there are none. meanwhile her two younger brothers, one has been sitting in the US 'looking' for colleges to apply for, has been doing nothing for an entire year. the youngest sibling, hasn't even finished high school and he's been sitting around home for 2 years now. All of this with no attention whatsoever from their parents. the dad is a civil engineer, but he is also a very traditional tribal-minded Yemeni, and the mom is a very nice, but also naive, ignorant Mexican woman with no formal education of her own.
this would not fly in a million years within my family.

Then you have a superiority complex. [champion837seem to take that as a superiority complex? i never asked anything of anyone to prove $hit to me.
My mother had no college education for most of her adult life until late in life, my father only had a bachelor degree in accounting and he is only one of 3 children (out of 9 - two of whom died while still children - one starved, and one died of side effects from medicine while in the arms of my late grandfather) with college education.
My family took painstaking measures to ensure my siblings and i got the education we needed to succeed. Like i i said, and apparently it isn't getting through because i'm apparently sounding arrogant. it takes persistence, and sacrifice.
explain to me then, the reason for high unemployment for black men compared to black women, and the fact that the greatest disparity in education is seen in black women in higher education (college and beyond) vs black men. I don't think it's simply that all the men are busy doing blue collar jobs for their families, not when we have the highest rates of single motherhood in the US's history. Something within the American black community is going on, and it isn't all about the white man keepin' them down. It has to do with values of that particular group. lamenting about the history of slavery gets you nowhere, all you have is the present, the here and now.
maybe that's racist. because i'm not black. Maybe if i was black and i said these things people wouldn't be so fast to get offended and jump to conclusions.
I did not set the standards, the proof - as it were - is in the pudding. what you do for your own kids now, will shape the future.

You do have a superiority complex. You think that because you have noticed certain aspects of life and succeeded where others have not, that it somehow makes you above someone else. "Something within the American black community is going on" Well it isnt magic, its oppression and poverty. Oh, and about "women are getting more education than black men" men are usually more inclined to go in the work force earlier then women. And women are usually not going to be out there in the street as much as men. When you think of a drug dealer, do you think of a woman? "all you have is the present, the here and now." We do have the present, one of which you tend to ignore that is a result from the past. They're more driven. Anyone with ambition can get top grades in math. champion837
you know what?
I was writing a response citing studies and statstics, and i found myself writing a freakin' report.
i give up, your right, i am 'superior' to black people. all the problems that the American black community deal with, all the reasons why it is still lagging behind the other groups, all are due to poverty and the continued systematic oppression of the black community.
Why do you keep making racist stereotypical threads about asians?
Anyway they are not inherently better at math than any other ethnic group. It's just that in Asian cultures they tend to place great value on learning and education and striving well in academics. Many Asian Americans are the sons and daughters of recent (or second generation) immigrants, and immigrant families tend to work really hard and probably instill this value into their children.
I do not see how this is a problem. It is inspirational for the rest of us, to show us that striving for goals is good and hard work can pay off. Asians are a gift to our country, like all ethnic groups are. We should try and learn from each other.
[QUOTE="jointed"]They're more driven. Anyone with ambition can get top grades in math. Some people are good at it, some aren't despite how much they try.
... they also decide which person their child should get married to..Chinese parents tend to push their kids to do well in school more so than American parents.

While I won't write an incredibly detailed post, there is one fundamental problem with your assertion, I believe. That is, the cultural of value of education is tied to the economic status of the community. Compare to many of the communities the American black community generally has the largest per capita of people under the poverty line so it would be easy to say it's something to do with the values of said community. But if you look at other ethnicities below the poverty line you'll see they do not value education. As those areas tend to have less funding, less chance for them to achieve, which means limited access to scholarships to pull themselves out of it. Plus their parents tend to drop out of school, be it to work or just lazy, which as you can tell creates a terrible example for their children. To use my school as an example, I know of a ton Asian students who had their parents send them from China to study here - fail. Many of the European-Canadians didn't value their education (who were from poor socio-economic backgrounds) and resulted them in failing
Also I think but this is rather baseless right now; slavery to this day still has a major effect on the African American community in terms of their values and success. Might expand on this later when I'm more awake.

Again, the problem is the Ghetto culture isn't limited to blacks, you can find a verity of ethnicities in the Ghetto culture. The problem you and fury have is just looking at the one enthicity who makes up the majority of the culture and attribute the problems of the Ghetto community to the larger black American community. Is there a reason blacks make up the majority of the Ghetto culture like up until recently they have been repressed, denied access to higher education which could lead to one of two things for their children. That is: they learn the value of education or since their parents lived without higher education they think they don't need it.
Really though most of knowledge of the Ghetto culture probably comes from media. As such we don't actually see the true culture just a manufactured identity to sell news.
This thread is so tame it makes me sick. Anyway god told me the answer to this question. Much like a blind man becomes more aware of his other senses when he loses his eye sight Asians focused on the parts of their brain that were more dominate. This is why they are good at math but not so much at emotion, language, dance, creativity and music. If this isn't true it's not my fault because I'm just passing on what god told me when I asked him the question. It's also possible god may be one of my 16 multiple personalities. Medical science at the local clinic deemed me sane but only 9 out of my 16 multiple personalities agreed. Thats less than half for those of you who aren't Asian and can't do the math.
