Please read my above post. Apparently the song is really neither of theirs, but they both recorded it. So it's possible that I've always heard the Willie Nelson version and you've always heard the Elvis Presley version.

i've always seen it as a conversation starter, just a way to break up the silence.

whenever i'm asked "what are you thinking?", I answer honestly, and either they are interested and we discuss it, or they learn to stop asking unless they are prepared for something kinda weird or nerdy.

luckily i found myself a nerdy girl, so when she asks "what are you thinking?" and I answer "i'm thinking about how to beat Golbez in Final Fantasy 4." we can actually have a conversation about it.

if you don't want to talk about it, then answer quickly and turn it around, asking her about herself.
