Why are most people afraid of spiders?

Yeah same here. People think I am weird because of it, lol.

I will never forget when I was little and caught like a good 3-4 foot water snake. I manage to startle it as I think it was actually sleeping and I grabbed it's tail as it attempted to take off. The thing turn around and bit me till all my knuckles were bloody....

I freaking grabbed it with my free-hand around it's "neck" and took that thing back home with me:lol:

As for a fear of spiders, I don't flip out and panic but I HATE them. Damn things have bit me in my sleep too many times...

I do remember reading that a slight fear of spiders is a normal evolutionary trait. We had to learn to fear them for what they can do to us (at least the venemous ones) and their strange figure doesn't help things in the least....

If you look closely you can tell it is two camel spiders, one of which appears to be grabbing onto the other.

I don't mind spiders that much. Although, I live in Scotland where spiders are not big, at all. Looking at some of those pictures are different though, I wouldn't want them in my house!

For just normal spiders though, I let them do their thing. I won't kill them or anything, they keep flies away so they aren't even useless.

Yes, we have alot of flies but the spiders are nice.

Spiders kind of creep me out, but I realize that they are a beneficial predator that eliminate annoying pest insests. Spiders generally keep to themselves and are clean. I think they typically bite humans, only when they feel they are in danger.

I kind of agree with what another poster said: Maybe the acute aversion to these creatures is because they seem so biologically foreign to us humans...they are very dissimilar to humans in their physical characteristics.

Plus, all those crappy B-movies about mutant spiders made during the 1950s-70s, and our mothers shrieking whenever they saw one, probably didn't help either.

I prefer to just keep my distance from any and all spiders.

If I see a small one out of my way, I leave it alone... however, anything bigger than like a centimeter wide, and I contemplate getting rid of it. It's just once they get that big I just begin to imagine that it could actually hurt if it got onto me and bit. I have a huge fear of anything that stings or bites, and I guess that translates to everyone. No one likes getting bitten or whatever... (at least I would hope so)

Forget any of those huge ones in those pictures... I'm glad I live in an area where spiders that big are extremely rare.

I don't mind looking at spiders from a distance, what distance that is depends on the size of the spider. :?

And touching them? HELL NO! :x

my room is in the basement (ya ya ya) and i often wake up with spider vites on my neck and back because i sleep on my stomache... sometimes i hallucinate that i see spiders crawling on the wall and on my bed. believe it or not i found out that some of my cousins, my dad and my uncles do too.

despite all this i'm not really afraid of them, i actually liked to play with them as a kid and make them fight eachother.

i effing HATE these things though.....uhghguhgughughguhg!!!!!!!!!

there are alot in my basement and they are so fast and scary.
