Everytime that any thread dealing with alcohol comes up, there always seems to be a number of people that come out of the woodwork. They always say that they have never and will never try alcohol. But why? Why be so close minded about something like this?

Its not like having a few drinks will condemn you to a life to habitual drinking. Or that having those few will hurt you in the long run. I know that alot of you on here are under-age but still, to be so close mindeed and so against something such as alcohol, is just very odd to me. Now I'm not saying that all of you young'ns should go out with a fake ID and pick up a 6-pack, but why eliminate the possibility that you'll ever try something in a responsible manner?

Im not opposed to drinking the drink is opposed to me, thats why it forces itself down my throat.

Personally i like to drink when im being sociable or on a night out, i wouldnt open a can of lager when i get home from work and watch TV or anything like that, nor would i enjoy spending all day in the pub drinking.

I'm not opposed to drinking, but I'll never do it.

Alcoholism and addiction run in my family.

I'm opposed to it because:

A: My dad was drunk and came so close to a car in the other lane there was a scratch on the rearview mirror,

B: I spilled my milk and got beat for it while he was drunk also,

C: Bad for your body

D: I know a guy who got paralyazed after getting hit by a drunk driver

E: Some drunk hobo guy gave me a hug

F: It smells :?

And... that's about it. >__>

My parents are divorced in large part because every night my father would come home and get drunk on vodka and pass out in front of the TV. His father would drink and beat his family, which kind of left my father with anger issues which he has managed to suppress enough to not beat the living daylights out of me. My great grandfather was also a drunk who left my grandfather and great grandmother when he was very young and he grew up dirt poor in Kentucky as a result of that, and I mean dirt poor. Like, poor by early 1930s standards. My mother's grandfather she never knew because he died drinking and driving. I'm not too hot on drinking for a couple reasons I guess...

ABout A. and B.: Its understandable if you've had trouble with alcoholics in your family, Although I don't think alcoholism is some kind of disease, I think its pretty reasonable for someone to have an "addictable personality" that could lead to alcoholism.

But I have to disagree with your other points. Wines and spirits in moderation have been prooved in many studies to be very healthy. And although it doesn't compare to the disabling of a friend, my first car was totalled by drunk driver, but I wouldn't ever try to drink and drive. Which is another part of drinking responsibly. And everyone tries to hug you when they're drunk.

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with drinking alcohol.

It's when you start getting out of control that it becomes a problem, but that can be said for anything.  As long as you are smart about it and keep it under control, more power to you.

Everything in moderation, including moderation.  That's my motto.

With that kind of thing, yeah, moderation's good. I'm flatly contradicting myself, but with so much of life, I love excess, really. But not with that kind of activity, no. I guess I'm just attracted to inconsistency. There's a really good part in "Travels With Charlie: In Search of Americ" when Steinbeck describes how he'll either fast or feast, sleep for a day or not sleep a wink for three days, that kind of thing. I like that kind of thing, really. I guess consistently getting hammered is against that though.

Drunk people are annoying and excercise worse than poor judgment.  Also, some people get very aggressive when drunk, although those people, as far as I can tell, tend to be aggressive to begin with.

And that's not to mention drunk driving, which ties into the above-mentioned "worse than poor judgment."

Just answering the question that was aksed.

Personal choice. I don't think it's close minded, just having strong convictions.

Yes.

Because idiots are going to go on the road drunk and kill innocent and sober people. Drinking isn't worth it for a stupid buzz.

But you don't have to get drunk to enjoy drinking. I drink pretty regularly, but havn't actually been drunk since probably New Years. But even a little bit of alcohol can relax you and make you more comfortable in social situations that you'd normally feel nervous about.

Again, its one thing to abuse alcohol, but its a completely different when you can consume it responsibly.

Wow, from what I can tell from those who oppose drinking, they think that a few drops of Bud Light will get you plastered and compel you to drive down the wrong side of the freeway.  I know it happens, but I hang out regularly with friends who drink and we haven't had a single problem with someone who tried to leave in their car when they were drunk.  That's if they even GET drunk.  Some of us have college the next morning and we don't need a hangover during class.

But the question was, "Why are people opposed to drinking?"  I merely gave reasons.

Also, I was just answering the question. I drink occasionally, but definitely in moderation.
