Let me know why you choose to be one if you wish. As for me, I believe the end of our human race is entirely possible if we don't try to survive. I am not proclaiming that we will die out, but I am claiming its possibility. I strongly doubt existence will reveal to us as the God many believe in depicted by various religions when we die. We are but one species in this vast universe we live in. We are but a small little blue planet gazing upon what seems to be endless stars. Learn the survival of the fittest. How about Natural Selection? If you don't realize this, you will become a dead civilization. Through science we shall battle, for best or worst. On our planet, or perhaps even another. The key to survival in this universe is attempting to understand it (what existence presents itself to be). There's only so much we can understand at this point. However, what is the future to reveal? Think of the things we have accomplished, stare at your screen and wonder how it's possible to even create such a complexity through the physical things available to you. What we stare at is existence or (god) if you want to call it that. We are clearly in a system, that does not operate outside of it as far as we are concerned. Why else would this universe be solvable through math and science? (Numbers, finity, infinity, time, strange stuff) For all we are concerned, existence is what it reveals itself to us. You think about history, you think about what humanity has done, and you eventually end up not taking the bible seriously, with the crazy proclamations, illogical banter, it's hard to truly believe that is our destiny. To be such weak, pathetic creatures in the face of god (especially when it's right in front us). Shouldn't we be trying to truly understand the universe/him/it/existence instead of basing it on fairy tales. To me it seems, when you are Christian, and accept one certain faith, You would rather cower at existence, than to fight it (by understanding) to survive. I accept no true faith. Things are changing every day.

Because I don't believe in a God due to lack of proof and I can't just "have faith" with something like that.

Because I don't believe in any religion. To be honest I'm a bit shocked how many people are religious.

i didnt bother to read your block of text, but ill answer the thread question I am an athiest because i dont believe, nor need to believe the creation stories told in any of the main 3 religions. nor do i need a guideline or ruleset to live my life apon.. nor do i need to submit myself into the fear that if i do not follow aformentioned ruleset, that i will not be allowed into so called paradice, and if it all turns out to be true, then i will be able to rot in hell with king diamond and the boys from slayer for the rest of eternity.

I don't have any faith. I don't care to know about how we all got here, and I also don't believe in something I can't see. In the end we all die anyway. I'm not going to waste my time worshiping something I can't actually communicate with for real. I'm not convinced by reading the bible. It's definitely not believable to begin with. There are so many religions out there that have this idea of some god, it is ridiculous. Life's too short for all of that in my opinion.

Edited just for you :)

No faith. Don't want faith. Don't care. Don't believe in something I can't see. In the end we all die anyway, not wasting my time worshiping something I can't actually communicate with for real, something I can't see. Not convinced by a book. Have you even read it? It;s definitely not believable to begin with. There are so many religions out there that have this idea of some god, ridiculous. Life's short. Don't wanna worry about it.

Because I think self-exploration and questioning the world around me and how it functions is somewhat incompatible with religion. My main gripe with religion is its ability to explain everything so easily. It's very convenient and comforting. Personally I'd rather be scared ****less about not knowing what's going on around me and trying to find out as much as I can than subscribing to a pre-set notion of how everything works and why.

EDIT:

Actually, I do believe in God, so the above applies really only to organized religion.

Well, I'm not one. :P

I personally adhere to the example set by Jesus in the Bible, although I imagine there are those out there who would retch at the idea of me calling myself a Christian. I don't think there's any real way of knowing with absolute certainty what the ultimate truth is, so as a result, I tend to look at beliefs more in terms of the effect they have on the person than on their objective factual merits. If one's beliefs lead to hatred, spite, and malice, then I can only come to the conclusion that those beliefs are not particularly good; conversely, if one's beliefs lead to selfless love for one's fellow man, generosity, and penitence, then I certainly will not tell that person that they ought to change their ways.

The way I see it, at the end of the day we'll all be gone from this world, and the only thing left will be the effect we have had on the world, so that really ought to be our number one focus as we go through our mortal existence. Our money and material goods will only be good for our extremely short time on Earth, but the impact we have on others and on the world is here to stay - so we'd darn well better make it something good.

Sorry for going off-topic. I got distracted by that guys massive douchiness, sorry. I'm atheist because I don't think that the Christian god, or the bible, make any logical sense. I used to think as a poor little kid why I went to church every morning. Then I started skipping with my friend(I went to a catholic school). I was raised as a catholic and I honestly never understood any of that bull.

Yeah, I also think that faith believers should know. This topic wasn't geared towards you. The question clearly states "Why are you an atheist?". If you aren't an atheist, then it doesn't really apply to you does it?

Well, first, it's not exactly a either/or thing between Christianity and atheism; otherwise, there wouldln't exactly be the dozen other religions out there.

That said, however, I think that you kind of missed the real point of the Bible (though I can't blame you - many others are guilty of this too). One passage I like was written by St. Augustine of Hippo in the early fifth century, and reads as follows:

"With the scriptures it is a matter of treating about the faith. For that reason, as I have noted repeatedly, if anyone, not understanding the mode of divine eloquence, should find something about these matters (about the physical universe) in our books, or hear of the same from those books, of such a kind that it seems to be at variance with the perceptions of his own rational faculties, let him believe that these other things are in no way necessary to the admonitions or accounts or predictions of the scriptures. In short, it must be said that our authors knew the truth about the nature of the skies, but it was not the intention of the Spirit of God, who spoke through them, to teach men anything that would not be of use to them for their salvation."

In other words, the Bible wasn't intended as a scientific or historical textbook, and treating it as such is pretty much missing the point. It is a book that is intended to instruct humans in how to live their lives, and is teeming with a message of unbounded and overflowing love that all humans ought to aspire to. Taken in this way, I think it's really a rather beautiful book with a lot of passages teeming with profundity, even if one does not accept the literal factual accuracy of accounts contained therein.

How dare you assume that I am an atheist! :x My christian butt is going to prosicute you in the name of baby jeezus! You seen what we did to Galileo, you're next OP!! YOU'RE NEXT! You better start eppur si mouving, cause I am coming for you.

Yeah, I also think that faith believers should know. This topic wasn't geared towards you. The question clearly states "Why are you an atheist?". If you aren't an atheist, then it doesn't really apply to you does it?

Yes it said "Why are *YOU* athiest, and I am not! Thusly I AM OUTRAGED! I expect and apology from the OP in a nicely writen private message in my inbox soon. Such assumptions are ridiculous, I am completely and utterly outraged.

Sorry, but not all topics are designed to appeal to every user. You are free to come here, but it clearly has nothing to do with what you believe in. So if you want to make a post about it, that's up to you.

I'm not an atheist. I'm too open-minded to reject the idea of a higher power out of hand.

WhiteSnake5000

You are part of a power. Is all that I think.

Which power, though?

I did know even though it doesn't seem so. At the same time I wanted to set an example to others about it.

I'm an Atheist because I simply don't know how the universe started.

Nobody does. Everyone who thinks they do is probably wrong, so get over it.

Rikusaki

I also forgot to say this too. When i tell people i'm an atheist they assume i believe in the "big bang theory"...which i don't. I don't really have an answer for how the universe came to be...if it ever even came to be.
