Why can't Batman comics (Or comics in general) be like normal books, or Manga

I really like Batman, the games, the movies, and so on. I would like to start reading the comic books, but there's no way to just start the series from the beginning. In Manga, if you want to start a series, go out and buy Volume #1 and you're set. Or just standard books, start with Volume #1. But you can't do that with comic books. You can't just go out and buy #1 of Batman unless you want to go on ebay and buy the first batman comic ever for a couple hundred dollars..

Why do comic books have to be this way? Why does there have to be a lot of different separate series involving batman. When it would just be easier for to be volume 1, 2, 3, etc. (imo)

I guess in a way, it's sort of a question. Where would I "start" reading from some-what of a beginning on the series standpoint? Where he first becomes batman, or even before then, and then I can continue on through all of it from there.

Well they do alot of retelling of Origin Stories, and as for DC comics they just rebooted their whole fiction back in september so now would be a good time to start. Its really not as complicated as it seems. Nice Avatar by the way.

Actually, since they rebooted the DC continuity you can technically go out and buy Batman 1 from the new 52.

Like everyone else is saying with the new 52. But if you are really want to see the start there is the batman chronicles. I have volumes 1 and 2. These have the first ever appearances of the the character from both detective comics and batman. I did the same for superman, but superman's stories were kind of boring.

If you want a comic that does label everything from volume 1 and so on you have hellboy and everything in that universe (BPRD, Lobster Johnson, etc.) Each series label all of their volumes so they are easy to read. And hellboy in hell is starting in december! and the BPRD hell on earth event is raging on!

You also have invincible by robert kirkman (the guy who writes the walking dead). This is the best superhero book ever, ever. The writing and art is fantastic and the volumes are labeled 1-16. There were some other titles in that universe as well like Brit, Capes, Astounding Wolf-Man, and Tech-Jacket and Guarding the Globe (originally a mini during the Viltrumite War) gets and ongoing this september. These titles are also labeled by number to easily follow.

But like I said with baman, Flashpoint rebooted the entire DC continuity. So now the New 52 is basically, the DCnU. If you want to read the flashpoint series which is collected into one volume you can find that so you can know how exactly the universe was rebooted and the get the titles from there, some of them already have a tpb of the first arcs out already.

Yeah, they released 52 titles in their reboot, but a few were dropped this spring at issue #8 and they were replaced with new ones.

and which ones were those? I have been meaning to stick to a couple of the series. but i prefer to wait for the trades. Plan on going after Batman, Catwoman, Nightwing, Batwoman, Green Lantern, and Justice League (if there is one) and would like to check out Batwing as well

I recommend Batwoman: Hydrology and Wonder Woman: Blood of the new 52. I am reading them right now and they are fantastic.

Replaced with: Batman Incoporated, Earth 2, Worlds' Finest, Dial H, GI Combat and, The Ravagers

ah i'll look at the new ones. it's too bad about Mister Terrific, i never thought he actually had his own comic line. and lol at Hawk and Dove, the whole concept felt like it could be good for one-off, not a series.

I've found with comics, usually the best way to find a good place to start is to google "where should i start reading [comic name]", or something of that sort. That's how I've been doing it. :P

You could just begin reading when a new story arc begins. Batman 11 just came out and I think it is the final book in it's story arc

You dont have to buy the original detective comics to read batman. They have made reprints and remakes that arent going to cost you millions of dollars.

Comics have always been like that though. If you decide to get into a series with many story arcs, different variations, different writers, etc then there is no right place to start. You simply choose any issue or a collected edition that appeals to you and go from there.

i just picked up the new batman 52 vol. 1 (issues 1-7). finished the first 2 and i can't find anything i don't like about it. i also STRONGLY recommend batman: year 100. it's a 4 part miniseries that takes place in a futuristic gotham city. it's probably my favourite art of any comics i've read; story is great too

both of these are really great comics. Long Holloween is still my favorite Batman comic, at least the best one i've ever read. and i've read Dark Victory, Dark Knight Returns, and Dark Knight Strikes Again. all three of which are still very good.

First of all a subpar condition Detective #27 (1939) or Batman #1 (1940) would probably run you somewhere in the ballpark of $300,000 so if you know of a place to get one for a couple hundred just drop whatever you're doing right now and go get it.

Secondly DC rebooted their entire line less than a year ago so you can get a Batman #1 (2011) up to the newest issue that just came out Wednesday, Batman #11 for like $20. Although to be honest DC did keep much of the old continuity intact for Batman and Green Lantern and started from scratch for everyone else.

All you need to know since the reboot though concerning Batman is that Killing Joke, Year One, Death in the Family and I think Long Halloween are still in continuity as well as Dick Grayson's time as Batman, and that Damian Wayne (Batman's Son) is Robin now, except since Stephanie Brown hasn't been introduced in the reboot yet that makes Damian the fourth Robin instead of fifth.

P.S. - If you don't know anything about the stories I listed above just google them, you can get the basic important points of the stories without wasting money buying them. And there are 5 different Batman series being published right now, but I would suggest just buying Batman.

You liked Dark Knight Strikes Again? I thought it was pretty mediocre, to be honest. Frank Miller just isn't good anymore. :(

Year One is the best Batman comic, ever, by a good margin.
