So anyway, I can barely drink any more. I used to like drinking all the time, but within the last 3 or 4 months, I've not really been able to. Like, I start drinking, but I can't make it anywhere NEAR what I used to drink. Like, I start drinking, then I start feeling sick after a couple of beers or one rum and coke. And if I somehow manage to drink what I used to drink, I wake up sick as a dog, with a HORRIBLE hangover.

Even worse, I can't even get drunk any more! I start drinking and then have to stop because I feel sick, but I don't manage to drink enough to get drunk. And that's the worst part really. I mean, we've all gotten sick off of alcohol before, but at least you expect to get drunk out of it. If you somehow end up skipping the drunkenness and go straight to being sick, what's the point of drinking at all?

Anyway, this has happened before, but the problem has always gone away after about a week or two. Not this time though. This time it's been at least 3 months since I've been able to drink like I'm supposed to, and I'm starting to get concerned. What if I NEVER get to go back to my usual drinking habits?

Anyway, does anyone have any idea what's going on here? If I drink a lot on a regular basis, so much that it's almost routine, why would I suddenly start to get sick after drinking just a little bit of alcohol?

I don't know why that'd happen, but quite frankly drinking enough alcohol to get drunk is not terribly healthy anyway, so your body is doing you a favor. :P

That's strange, I don't think I've ever heard of that happening before. Maybe you should see a doctor. It could be a sign of a larger problem you're not aware of.

And for the record, this is NOT a fad topic. I just looked at the other topics AFTER making this topic, and was shocked at the similarity of this title with another. But I absolutely swear on the name of everything I care about that I didn't even SEE that other topic until after I made this post.

Based on my 12th grade knowledge of biology and watching some episodes of House and ER, I'd say go see a doctor, because your liver may have fudged the bucket.

I wondered that at first, but I think I'm a little bit young to have a failing liver.

Might be liver problems, or perhaps you have developed an intolerance to it. Maybe an allergy to something in the beer or alcohol.

If you drink to get drunk then you could be 21 with a 75 year old liver.

I would say it's worth checking out though, because it'd be rather important to find out if something was the matter, and if not, the doctor will just say nothing's wrong.

Your never too young for anything (except maybe alzheimer's. If you drink enough to get drunk everytime you drink, then, yeah, you have probably could have done some damage. Get it checked out, seriously.

Maybe you should go to a doctor and see if you still have a liver.

That sucks though, hopefully I will still have my drinking capacity until the end of college.

I wouldn't consider knocking back a couple of beers or R&C's and then waking up with a wicked hangover "drinking", so you might as well go to the doctor. At least if he/she tells you to stop drinking, you can go for that whole "my body is a temple" thing.

Well if you can't drink anymore, that's the case regardless of whether or not a doctor tells you so, so you might as well take the step not to get liver failure as well.

Okay, here's another question.

Let's suppose that my liver is damaged. Is there any way to fix it without getting medical help?

After all, it's well-known that the liver has startling regenerative properties. That's been known for thousands of years, and is the source of the myth about Prometheus's liver getting eaten by an eagle every night and then regenerating every morning as punishment for him giving fire to mankind.

So like, is there some diet or something I can go on to fix my liver? What about eating liver? Does eating liver (beef/pork/chicken/etc) contribute to one's overall liver health? After all, if you were to fix a liver with food, it stands to reason that you would have to eat things that make up a liver. And what better way to eat such things than to eat ACTUAL livers?

The only advice I can give is to at least stop drinking for a little while and maybe go back onto it after a break ...

Either that , or go and see a doctor. You never know ... You might end up like my dad did ... he used to drink a lot.Did'nt really stop ... and ended up with a severely damaged liver (Internal bleeding in it and everything). He was never able to drink again.

Well, once cirrhosis of the liver occurs there's no way to fix it. It's pretty much permanent. It just depends how much damage has been done already that determines how a person fares in the long run. (And yes I know that there are other causes of cirrhosis besides alcohol)

I don't think its liver damage but then again I'm nothing close to a doctor. It might just be something with your body naturally rejecting it. It happened to me with beer, I love beer, but it got warmer out and all I've been drinking is straight Captain and SoCo because beer has been making be want to die.

My #1 recommendation is trying new alcohol.

Also, liver is an all around good food for you in general and is full of nutrients I believe.

MrGeezer

Given that the liver is also the place where all of the toxins (like alcohol) go and get processed, no, that probably wouldn't be a good idea.

To be perfectly frank, your best bet to help a damaged liver - although I still say it couldn't hurt to see a doctor about this - is to stop feeding it damaging toxins in the form of consumed alcohol. If you're harming something, the obvious solution is to stop harming it. But I'm aware that that isn't the solution you'd prefer to hear.

As others have said, though, it might not be a damaged liver. It could also simply be that something has caused a lack of tolerance to alcohol. I myself can't drink nearly any alcohol without getting a bad headache, which... again, ought to be a sign to stop drinking alcohol.

I think there may be some truth to that. MAYBE.

Like, I usually have a couple of beers after work. Then I go home and start drinking liquor. Only that recently, I've had to stop VERY soon after drinking liquor since I start to get sick.

Tonight though, I had my 2 beers after work. I was really thirsty and hot, so I thought that a couple of beers would really hit the spot. Not so. I started feeling bad, and got even thirstier. So I figured that I'd stop by the store on the way home and buy some orange juice. Drank a little bit of it on the ride home, but saved most of it for mixing with booze. Got home and mixed it with some vodka. And I've downed more booze tonight than I've managed to do in at least a week, and I don't even feel the slightest bit sick yet.

The thing is, I RARELY drink booze and orange juice. I almost always mix my booze with coke. Could the fact that I've been feeling sick simply have to do with the TASTE? Could it be that the alcohol isn't making me sick, but that I've been drinking booze and coke for so loing that I'm completely and utterly sick of the taste?

Is it a simple matter of just finding other alcoholic beverages to drink? Maybe I'm not feeling sick because of alcohol, maybe I'm just feeling sick as a nauseated response to drinking something that I've grown to dislike?

Whatever the case, you really should go to the doctor. I mean, not as if your situation will change, regardless of what he or she may or may not say.

1. Beer is'nt really good for thirst anyway.Always does make you thirstier ...

2. And it could be to do with taste of what you're drinking aswell. For example , I myself could handle a whole litre of whisky and be fine.Yet , a few glasses of wine would make me as sick as a dog simply because I despise the taste, and even the smell of it.

Is it a simple matter of just finding other alcoholic beverages to drink? Maybe I'm not feeling sick because of alcohol, maybe I'm just feeling sick as a nauseated response to drinking something that I've grown to dislike?

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me. I used to not like whiskey until I started drinking it with something other than coke. I think as we mature, we focus more on what is pleasing to all senses when drinking. It's the difference between drinking that $20 per half gallon vodka as a young drinker and spending the extra $15 - $25 on a decent tasting vodka as you get older.

My #1 recommendation is trying new alcohol.

Okay, here's what I'll do. I won't see a doctor YET. I'll give it a week or two. In the meantime, I'll switch up my drinks. TRy new drinks and see if I start feeling better. If in two weeks I am still getting sick off of miniscule amounts of alcohol, THEN I will see a doctor.

Way I see it, if it's really a problem with my liver, another two weeks of drinking won't make much of a difference. So I'll give it two weeks, try out new drinks, and see if that solves the problem. And if at the end of two weeks I'm still getting sick, then I'll go to a doctor.
