Its only the stereotypical "dumb blonde". Most Americans find it annoying as well.

Please don't say "Why do Americans" please...it's a generalization and you know it. On Topic: Some may overuse it if they don't know exactly what to say...it has happened to me before.

It's not just Americans. My sister used 'like' as a comma, and it bugged the hell out of everyone. It's just filler.

I almost made a thread about this recently. Twice, actually. Once, when i was in a cafe and some girl next to me telling her friend a story said it after ever other word. The second time, I thought about making a thread mentioning racial differences using that example (what you speak of is a "white thing", that I find just as annoying as the black slang that is often brought up here). Basically, I probably speak too properly, and everything else annoys me...

This is not a "American" thing. Generally when a person is nervous speaking in public or among a group of people they are not comfortable with they use "like", "umm", "uhh", "you know", "you know what I mean". When your searching for words or are nervous it is natural for you to use these words. Only people how talk too much but don't have anything to say use "like" all the time.

I went to highschool in New Hampshire and yeah, way too many people used the word "like" in the method TC was referring to.

Hopeless -- yeah, perfect sense. you use it to compare 2 things, so do I.

It's become the same thing as "um" and "uh," just like "you know" has. Just a verbal interjection that has no meaning. It's not as though people are purposely saying them.

For whatever reason a lot of peolple like to use it when they're unsure of what they're talking about, or just aren't effective speakers in general. My roomate had the stereotypical sorority girlfriend and I swear every time she came over our house I heard "Like" a hundred times. Not exagerating that at all...it was sad...

Like, this guy was like, 'what the f*ck??!' and I was all like, 'whaaaaaaaaaaaaat????' so he, like, walked over to this other chick and, like, made out with her and I'm all like, 'ewwwwwww'.

Teenagers or middle age people mostly women Overused te word "Like" its getting annoying and i feel weird saying it and whenever i write it i put "Like" because its starting to feel wierd

TBoogy

I almost made a thread about this recently. Twice, actually. Once, when i was in a cafe and some girl next to me telling her friend a story said it after ever other word. The second time, I thought about making a thread mentioning racial differences using that example (what you speak of is a "white thing", that I find just as annoying as the black slang that is often brought up here). Basically, I probably speak too properly, and everything else annoys me...

White slang? alot of the black girls at my college use like excessivly, and so do alot of the white girls.

Really... Never heard a black girl use it before, but I don't doubt that blacks who hang around a lot of whites may use it too. Mostly, I get "i'm sayin'" or some variation of it from blacks to annoy me.
