Please don't say "Why do Americans" please...it's a generalization and you know it. On Topic: Some may overuse it if they don't know exactly what to say...it has happened to me before.Teenagers or middle age people mostly women Overused te word "Like" its getting annoying and i feel weird saying it and whenever i write it i put "Like" because its starting to feel wierd

Omg omg omg, I like totally understand what you're saying and stuff. It's like HELLO?! lol omg jk. Omg, did you see what Tiffany was wearing today? It was like soooo slutty. You could totally see her bra through her shirt. Like that impresses anyone. Whatev-, right? As if. Gawd I hate Tiffany!!!
I don't know anyone that uses that word excessively.....LJS9502_basic
I agree. I don't hear that in any conversations.
I almost made a thread about this recently. Twice, actually. Once, when i was in a cafe and some girl next to me telling her friend a story said it after ever other word. The second time, I thought about making a thread mentioning racial differences using that example (what you speak of is a "white thing", that I find just as annoying as the black slang that is often brought up here). Basically, I probably speak too properly, and everything else annoys me...Teenagers or middle age people mostly women Overused te word "Like" its getting annoying and i feel weird saying it and whenever i write it i put "Like" because its starting to feel wierd

I don't think so...i say "like" when i am tryingto liken something to something else..if that makes any sense..
I always thought it was mostly a southern californian thing. Is it really that widespread across the U.S.?clayron
I went to highschool in New Hampshire and yeah, way too many people used the word "like" in the method TC was referring to.
Hopeless -- yeah, perfect sense. you use it to compare 2 things, so do I.
For whatever reason a lot of peolple like to use it when they're unsure of what they're talking about, or just aren't effective speakers in general. My roomate had the stereotypical sorority girlfriend and I swear every time she came over our house I heard "Like" a hundred times. Not exagerating that at all...it was sad...
Like, this guy was like, 'what the f*ck??!' and I was all like, 'whaaaaaaaaaaaaat????' so he, like, walked over to this other chick and, like, made out with her and I'm all like, 'ewwwwwww'.

White slang? alot of the black girls at my college use like excessivly, and so do alot of the white girls.
Just saying
Better question. Why do they always use the phrase "Couldn't care less" incorrectly as "Could care less" Do you guys know what this implies?

its getting wierder when someone says "could care less" already sounds wierd even if its the right one "Bloody hell" (overuses word from england) it is overuse so much words

Really... Never heard a black girl use it before, but I don't doubt that blacks who hang around a lot of whites may use it too. Mostly, I get "i'm sayin'" or some variation of it from blacks to annoy me.I almost made a thread about this recently. Twice, actually.
