It's not just Brits, but the same goes for most other countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. North America (and maybe Japan too) is pretty much the only place that calls it "soccer" instead of football.
As for Brits, a lot of people here tend to view American football as just a toned-down version of rugby.
You would find it's the whole of Europe. We just don't like that you call football soccer and tried to make soccer the international word, whilst american football is mostly played with your hand... logic? F*ck off and enjoy hand egg.SaltyMeatballs
its soccer bro, get it right..we americans set the standards for everyone
It seems that everytime the NFL gets brought up there is always atleast one "hurr durr LOL handegg" comment, usually coming from a brit. i can understand not liking football but why do UK/Soccer fans always feel the need to shit on the NFL?ManInFlamesbecause they hijacked the name "football"
aside from the name, as someoone mentioned they are a toned down version of rugby where bare muscle and skin collide each other not plastic armour.

Football evolved over the years and now includes several subsets....rugby, Canadian, American, Australian. ALL are football games. However, in NA (US and Canada) the term soccer is preferred because there are other more popular forms of football. And again...soccer was is a British term.

I don't know, and they're assholes for doing it. And then the same people get all offended when people call soccer soccer. Guess what, that's what we call it in the US, some random guy on the internet is going to change that.

In this instance, does 'brit' translate to mean 'anyone who isn't an american or a canadian?pie-junior

But the Brits invented the term 'Soccer'.
When speaking on international forums, it should be called 'American football'. Even that's not perfect, since the rest of the Americas prefer actual football.
US forum though.....so soccer it is.When speaking on international forums, it should be called 'American football'. Even that's not perfect, since the rest of the Americas prefer actual football.

Why would anyone care that a group of people call something by a different name? Americans don't get upset when ppl in the UK call it a "boot" instead of the "trunk" of the car. Or "petrol" instead of "gas." It's silly and petty.

Lots of sports were called 'football'. It just means you're on your feet, unlike polo where you're on a horse.

[QUOTE="pie-junior"]In this instance, does 'brit' translate to mean 'anyone who isn't an american or a canadian'? A lot of people have a problem with the american audacity to downplay the single most popular sport in the world and equate it with what are really marginal, localised sports (like american football, basketball, hockey or w/e), in the global sports scene. so they make sure to outdo the petulant fanboy behaviour, preemtivelyroulettethedog
World Football is the most popular sport FOR NOW. I'd argue that American invented sports of Basketball and Baseball are gaining on world football.
They've still got a long way to go. Currently, Tennis and Cricket are the most popular sports after Football (i.e. association football), worldwide.
