[QUOTE="GazaAli"] Yea I'm not blaming or patronizing the NFL or Handegg for that. It will always be an American thing I guess.GazaAli

I doubt it. I'm not saying t it will ever be as popular as soccer in the rest of the world, but there are supposedly serious considerations to bring the NFL to other countries. And like I said, the NFL packs the stadium in London every season.

I find this to be very surprising.

American football seems pretty popular in Great Britain.  A lot of people enjoy the sport, which is why 80,000+ seat stadiums sell out when the NFL plays over there.

[QUOTE="blue_hazy_basic"][QUOTE="thegerg"] "I do think its hilarious that the US invents sports and then declares themselves world champions without playing anyone from outside the US " What sport are you talking about?cain006

Baseball and NFL. Have you never heard that before?

Well I'd be pretty surprised if a team outside the US could beat them. I imagine the best baseball/football players from other countries come to the US because they'll get paid more.

That's only true for the teams, but if there would be a world cup like the one for football (soccer if you will), everyone would play for their own country. Not that I don't think the US wouldn't be one of the top contenders, but they wouldn't have the best players from all over the world.

World champions means the team is the one that won the top of the sport. You want to compete....do so. Otherwise stop whining.

I think you misunderstood what I said. If national teams compete in a world championship, the only people who could play for the American national team are Americans. cain006 thought that the american team would have the best players from around the world because they would pay them more, and I was trying to tell him that that's not how it works.

American football has no flow, its a stop start nightmare. Considering that the players are only active for 10 seconds out of every 40 it is a wonder why the game is divided in quarters. I guess that just so they can squeeze in as many advertisments as possible.

It's not just Brits, but the same goes for most other countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. North America (and maybe Japan too) is pretty much the only place that calls it "soccer" instead of football.

As for Brits, a lot of people here tend to view American football as just a toned-down version of rugby.

[QUOTE="GazaAli"][QUOTE="Pirate700"]Right, largely because it doesn't exist in most of the world. It's kind of hard to be into something you have zero exposure to.

It's more about lots of action within a short period of time. With soccer, you have action, but it's spread out.

Join the leagues...though football is a superbowl...not a world championship bowl.

There also can be an argument made that competitions like the "World Series" can be named that b/c baseball teams usually have players from all around the world that are competing in it (Japan, American, Latin America, etc).

Yup, yup.  I don't get all bent out of shape when people call American football gridiron, it clarifies things.  Calling association football soccer clarifies things.  And calling the type of football you grew up with football is completely reasonable, if a confusion ever arises you can just say either soccer or gridiron, simple.  The "hurr durr handegg" crowd just seems like a bunch of butthurt whiners who are angry because "waaah, you're not calling it what we call it!  Waaah, we were here first, it's not fair!"

Some Brits did, but the majority of Brits have always called it just Football.

filling a stadium once a year is not the same as filling it week after week in multiple locations.
