Why do people dress up/ become goth, etc

I have to know the idea behind becoming a goth. Is it attention-seeking, is it cause yur pale, is it because of a music band, are you imitating someone.

I have to know why because i am unbelievably annoyed at people who complain about discrimination to goths. Why don't you just change your clothes/ hair/ spend more time outside.... I am a VERY, very fair person but to think that people knowingly put themselves forward to discrimination and then complain about??!!!???

And that crap about expressing themselves is ridiculous, i mean i am expressing myself right now by typing up whats bugging me on OT.

(PLZ Do not start complaining to me about this because i do not care for your complaining, just tell me the reason for it.....)

Probably to try to "fit in." No different than dressing like a hick, jock, prep, wanna-be gangsta, emo, or any of the other high school social groups.

Most of the goths i meet are normal people and some are quite funny, but i just have no idea why they dress in such an annoying way that makes me feel really uncomfortable around them. I mean i have friends of practically every race and major cultureon the earth (south american, U.S, all parts of EU, Africa, Asia, Pacific, Muslims, Christians, bhuddists, hindu, Jew, etc) but the one kind of person i can't make friends with are goths, so i want to know why i can't.

Currently i believe that i can't make friends with them because they willfully put themselves into such a social predicament..

Because they feel like it? Why do people such as yourself bother complaining about them on game websites? Why are we even wearing clothes right now?

My main assumption is people dress up like goths because they've never had anything bad happen to them in their lives, but *want* bad things to happen so they can justify their whining.

Well see asking a goth why he is goth might not be the most sensitive thing i would have done............

Anyway this is OT: OFF TOPIC its all kinds of stuff. I think that people from other places with different upbringings may shed some light on this mistery.

You see, the reason i bought this subject up is beacause of that other thread about how a teacher making an innocent joke to a goth girl about getting rid of vampires in the classroom. She responded to this by storming out while crying. After seeing such events myself, i think WHY THE HELL DO THESE PEOPLE DRESS LIKE THAT IF THEY CAN'T HANDLE THE ATTITUDES OTHER PEOPLE ARE GOING TO HAVE....... It's kind of like when a guy kept tauting me about why wouldn't i just punch him in the face and when i did punch im, his first reaction was WTH why?????

See it's this kind of moronic behaviour that pisses me off. If they can't handle being a goth then they SHOULDN'T BE A GOTH.

that non-conformity thing is kind of stupid, there are a lot of easier ways to be non-conformed. It is sad if your only friend pressured you into being a goth, i can understand, but i think you'll have a LOT more friends if you aren't a goth (p eople are very prejudiced about this sort of thing)

I know not all goths are like that and i make that kind of clear in one of my earlier posts, the ones who can handle the social backlash can do whatever they want to and they aren't so jumpy as the ones who can't. The ones who can't cango back to being to conformists or just express themselves in different ways, because however much they try they will not be able to change the world's opinion towards goths. (yes i do go to high school)

I am not Goth so I can't really speak for Gothic people. :P Just don't worry about it. Let them do as they wish.

Well see i hate it when goths especially complain or have extrem reactions such as that goth girl to other people's opinion, why don't they just not be goths. I mean people who are handicapped can't do anything about it, so i wouldn't be pissed off at such reactions, but when someone who can change themselves don't and whine instead, thats just moronic in my point of view...

With all the 'mall goths' I've come across, it just seems they think they are awesome and cool and tough and non conforming and attention seeking etc etc... but it's exactly the same with any other person... why dress metro, bopper, jock etc... just dress however the hell you want!

Originally I did it to attract other goths, but after a while I felt a lot more comfortable in dark clothes and leather (jackets) so I just stuck with it, even though my girlfriend is practically the opposite of goth (except in her musical tastes).

he as every right to dress however the **** he want's, if he like being and looking how he/she does why the **** should he/she have to change to fit into some sort of general perceptions of how someone should look like? It's like saiying that you don't understand gays since they can just get straight and not get descriminated against

Variety of reasons, why do people dress as skater, pop, emo, scene, jock etc etc?

Though if I were to hazard a guess it would probably be too much teenage angst, they like the look, they're intrigued by the culture or they want to fit in somewhere.

Because that's what they like to do? To each his own, as far as I'm concerned.

Why does anyone choose a fashion or interests?

There could be a lot of reasons why, some people are really into the fashion along with the sub culture in which case thats absouletly fine. Its not always about attention.
