Oh, and just an FYI genius, but i wasnt **** at them for drinking, i was **** at them for DRINKING UNDERAGE. There's a very, very important distinction between those two.

GTALoco

Not really. The minimum drinking age varies greatly from country to country and no matter where you go it's pretty much just an arbitrary restriction. The law is often a terrible gauge for morality and I don't see much of a difference between some stupid 19 year olds drinking and some stupid 21 year olds drinking.

Well i live in the US. The age limit here is 21. Knowing our society i think most of us could agree that is certainly an acceptable limit. I hang around kids my age after all, lol. teenagers, 19 year olds, are often very irresponsible, more susceptable to binge drinking, peer pressure, and the like. They should certainly not be allowed access to alcohol. I think you could agree to that atleast.

I'm 19 and live in the US as well, but 21 is still just an arbitrary number. I mean, by 18 a person is a legal adult and can do pretty much everything he'll ever be able to do legally at that point, except for drink. In most countries the legal drinking age is 18 and lower in many, but that still doesn't indicate what it should be anywhere. I don't really see a problem with lowering the age, but then I don't really care. I've been around a lot of drunk teenagers and a lot of drunk college students... there's really no difference, and in this case, there really isn't a very important distinction between 21 and 19.

Oh no no no i get your point. And as someone brought up earlier, if you can fight for your country at age 18. I actually hadnt thought of that and now i do agree with you both, the age limit does seem a bit strange, even random.

No, i am afraid you are wrong. Now yes, i did CERTAINLY attempt to start up a debate, perhaps i want to be convinced. However, this certainly is not a bash fest. I am in college, and that's EXACTLY why i dont understand. Why the **** are these idiots drinking when we all need our brains working at 100% capacity to pass the most important institution we will EVER be in. This stage of our life is more important than ANY other, for it WILL determine just how high we can fly in life.

THAT is why i am confused. I debate it with my friends all the time. I certainly am not asking for it to be made illegal. I just want to know WHY. Why do people feel it necessary? I am of the GENUINE curiousity because i have been able to go ALL MY LIFE without consuming ANY beer WHATSOEVER. So yes, i guess maybe i am that naive. Unfortuanatly, instead of considering that, you chose to be an ****

Tolwan

Okay, if you're REALLY being serious, here's the answer....

Drumroll please........

......They drink alcohol because it gets them high.

That's your answer. If you didn't already know this, I pity you. And if you did already know it but just refused to accept it, that's your answer. People drink alcohol because it gets them high.

No one thinks it's NECESSARY, it's just a fun thing to do when you have time for it, such as going to a concert or having a Halo 3 party.

Are you now going to make a post asking why kids go to pointless concerts when they could be studying?

And after that, are you going to make a post asking why you're hanging out on a videogame discussion board when you could be studying?

You just dont like me do you? See the concept i didnt understand is why is it necessary to get high. There are plenty of th..you know what, forget it. I'm just naive. There, period. I dont get it, i wont get it. And you know what, a previous poster was probably right. It's probably because i've never experienced it and thus dont understand it, and therefor wont ever understand it. I've just had a bad couple weeks, friends getting drunk or constantly drinking around me, friends i've known for years who use to be clean like me are now spending half their time out drinking. But whatever man, do what you guys want. Sure as hell isnt a reason to bash a person who chooses not to drink. **** hell.

I guess i should stab people to understand a murder, i guess i should take heroine to understand it's effect. No, you dont need experience, just knowledge. If i came off superior i apologize, but if you re-read this entire thread you will see there have been several people who have come off VERY aggressive where the responses could have EASILY been made in a more mature light. So i have been aggravated.Tolwan

Frankly, you got exactly what you deserved. Do I think that binge drinking is good? Of course not, but there is no excuse for being judgemental. Don't apologize for acting superior, because apologizing is not going to change the fact that you think you're better than the other kids your age who drink. You think you're smarter than them. You think that they're a bunch of idiots who can't help but fall to peer pressure. At least they're doing what they want to do, and not sitting back and passing judgement.

Knowledge is impossible without understanding, and understanding comes from experience, and experience alone.

See the concept i didnt understand is why is it necessary to get high.

Tolwan

It's NOT freaking necesary.

For the VAST majority of people who drink alcohol, it's not necessary AT ALL.

Why are you assuming that everyone who drinks alcohol is a hardcore alcoholic?

Dude, relatively few alcohol drinkers NEED alcohol. People just drink alcohol because it's FUN. It makes people feel good, and it can make a fun situation even more fun (or loess fun, depending on how much you drink). Not everyone who drinks alcohol gets ****faced and then ends up crapping their pants and vomiting on your sofa when it's time for them to wake up[ and go to class.

It's not necessary at ALL. It's no more or less necessary than ANY of the other things that people do purely for fun.

Really, how hard is it to understand that?

Alcohol in moderation has been found to have health benefits. In addition, many doctors recommend alcohol to patients. As for beer.....it's refreshing and relaxing. It's only when abused that alcohol is a problem.

As long as you're not driving or fighting it's okay to drink more beer.....but it tends to have some health risks in that case.

beer is food. it tastes good, and it's good for you. in fact, i brew my own. brewing is a hobby that i'm passionate about, and consuming the fruits of my art and labor are especially satisfying to me. i make better beer than you can buy.

as for alcohol in general, i only buy and consume the highest quality and best tasting spirits and wine and beer. you only live life once, there's no point in drinking rotten booze. if a person's reason for drinking were merely to get drunk, then everclear would be the drink of choice. it's high proof and cheap. but the stuff lacks flavor and makes you feel sick and that's never been my reason for drinking, although i do appreciate a good buzz.

finally, "underage drinking" may be a matter of legal definition in some jurisdictions, but at least in the US it is more of a social concept. it is not drinking below a certain age, but the purchase and public possession of alcohol in the US that is restricted by age. that's the general case, but there are a very small handful of states that do prohibit drinking alcohol below a certain age. in most states, minors are not categorically prohibited from consuming alcohol.

alcohol in moderation doesn't hurt people, but it undeniably has health implications when consumed to excess.

Alcohol can be very dangerous to a minor because their liver is very young and can easily be damaged by the toxins. but as you get older (ie past 14-15) you can drink more without the serious dangers and by the time your 18-19, drinking responsibly is a safe (and enjoyable) practice.
