I the fear of the unknown is what get's me.

I think many don't fear death because many have not been face to face with it. It's a known that is inevitable, but for the time being it's abstract and far-off. If you tell most people they'll be dead in a week (like a doctor who knows his stuff), most probably will feel the urge to vomit and s**t their pants. Unless you're Ghandi or something.
When it's all said and done, from burning alive to simply going in your sleep, you'll be dead. No trauma or memories, nothing to hold onto. It's over, done, mission accomplished. Yet people fear it so much. Why?

Because people seen this world and they don't want to leave it. They are afraid of the unknown, they're afraid of what's beyond death. But that is a metaphysical conversation that I won't have here.
fear of death is the fear of the unknown, its the same reason why people obssess over ghosts and aliens, its the fear of the unknown which people fear, its part of the reason why people go to a church on sundays, to find some explanation for what may happen after death
You were non-existent for about 13 billion years until recently, did that bother you? No. Nor will it bother you when you return to that state.RandoIph
From a non-religious perspective; exactly. I don't understand this fear of eternal nothingness. You won't experience it. You'll have no idea you're dead, kind of like you had no idea you weren't born. The concept of consciousness after death is ludicrous.
But of course I don't beleive that. To me, hell would be a valid reason to fear death. Eternal pain and torment? There is nothing worse.
Because their deepest desires are to experience things of this world. They don't desire things of the Hereafter.
... The universe is made of engery. WE are made of energy(another words, Vibrating atoms) When we Die, We just go back into the universe as a more pure energy. Then we get asked. " Would you like to move along, Or would you like to go back " And, if you go back.... you are reborn and if you decide not too.... well, you go travel the universe. ( thats my reality of it anyway )Because the thought of eternal nothingness is scary.

[QUOTE="Nicksonman"]You don't know if this will be the case since you haven't experienced death.pariah3I think that only God or some higher power can decide what he wants to do with us after we die. He can either destroy our soul completely and give us eternal death or he can resurrect us and give us a new and improved body. And you got this information from where?

Biologically we are built to survive, it's why we have antibodies and our blood coagulates and cells regenerate - the thought of not surviving scares us because it's a built in mechanic to make sure we WANT to survive because that's what the cells in our bodies want us to do.
There's a difference between the will to survive and fearing death. This was all discussed earlier in the thread so I won't go through it.Biologically we are built to survive, it's why we have antibodies and our blood coagulates and cells regenerate - the thought of not surviving scares us because it's a built in mechanic to make sure we WANT to survive because that's what the cells in our bodies want us to do.

Unless you believe in reincarnation it's pretty much the same, eternal nothingness is what awaits us after death.Because the thought of eternal nothingness is scary.
