Because the thought of eternal nothingness is scary.

You were non-existent for about 13 billion years until recently, did that bother you? No. Nor will it bother you when you return to that state.

I think many don't fear death because many have not been face to face with it. It's a known that is inevitable, but for the time being it's abstract and far-off. If you tell most people they'll be dead in a week (like a doctor who knows his stuff), most probably will feel the urge to vomit and s**t their pants. Unless you're Ghandi or something.

There are plenty of people who do not fear death (like myself) but you can see why someone would, the idea of no more life, nothingness is a depressing one, for those of us who believe there is no life after death it can be quite a scary thought.

I personally don't fear death, but I fear losing people close to me. I fear my mother's passing.

you have to think of it this way, its not the fact that your dead that cuases fear ( atleast not for me ) its that while i'm alive i understand that when i do, or when someone close to me does, that i will never ever see my loved ones again

I don't.

It's just...death.

Now,what happens AFTER it...that's another story.

When it's all said and done, from burning alive to simply going in your sleep, you'll be dead. No trauma or memories, nothing to hold onto. It's over, done, mission accomplished. Yet people fear it so much. Why?

PS2_ROCKS

Because people seen this world and they don't want to leave it. They are afraid of the unknown, they're afraid of what's beyond death. But that is a metaphysical conversation that I won't have here.

fear of death is the fear of the unknown, its the same reason why people obssess over ghosts and aliens, its the fear of the unknown which people fear, its part of the reason why people go to a church on sundays, to find some explanation for what may happen after death

From a non-religious perspective; exactly. I don't understand this fear of eternal nothingness. You won't experience it. You'll have no idea you're dead, kind of like you had no idea you weren't born. The concept of consciousness after death is ludicrous.

But of course I don't beleive that. To me, hell would be a valid reason to fear death. Eternal pain and torment? There is nothing worse.

Well death makes you cease existing. It doesn't sound very... appealing to me. Unable to think, to do anything.

Because their deepest desires are to experience things of this world. They don't desire things of the Hereafter.

... The universe is made of engery. WE are made of energy(another words, Vibrating atoms) When we Die, We just go back into the universe as a more pure energy. Then we get asked. " Would you like to move along, Or would you like to go back " And, if you go back.... you are reborn and if you decide not too.... well, you go travel the universe. ( thats my reality of it anyway )

I think that only God or some higher power can decide what he wants to do with us after we die. He can either destroy our soul completely and give us eternal death or he can resurrect us and give us a new and improved body.

And you got this information from where?

Biologically we are built to survive, it's why we have antibodies and our blood coagulates and cells regenerate - the thought of not surviving scares us because it's a built in mechanic to make sure we WANT to survive because that's what the cells in our bodies want us to do.

There's a difference between the will to survive and fearing death. This was all discussed earlier in the thread so I won't go through it.

Hmm, what you said... Unless you believe in reincarnation it's pretty much the same, eternal nothingness is what awaits us after death.
