Maybe they just don't like those bands' music? I don't like any of those bands that you just listed and it has nothing to do with jealousy of their success or not wanting to conform (most of the bands I listen to are pretty mainstream), it's just that I don't care for their music.
People are scared of Pop music. pop= popular.
they think they're cool, or think their music is better because the bands they like arent popular.
they think any band on MTV/VH1 is a sell out, and assume they suck.
well, if your such a good indie band, then why are you still indie?
If your so good, why havent you been signed?
It's a complex form of jealousy:
I don't like a thing but that thing is more successful than the things I like=I hate that thing
Linkin Park and Avenged Sevenfold are examples of this but one could argue that they both changed their style. But what about a band like Dragonforce? Everyone loved them and when they were in Guitar Hero III everyone liked them more and now all of a sudden everyone is starting to hate them now. Just because a band is popular doesn't mean their bad.MM87
Everything popular has a hater
Looks like I have to be the voice of reason once again
People hate popular bands, because music is like anything other medium. Its a business, record companies want to make money. To make money you must create music that appeals to the biggest audience possible (or a very targeted group).
To create music that appeals to a lot of people, you must create music that appeals to both male and female (not all the time, but in most cases). This is why I hate "popular" music. It is commercialized drivel, and none of it appeals to me because I do not like poppy, lame, and generic music. The lyrics tend to be hilariously bad, the music is usually played with little skill and the images of most bands are pathetic (females tend to like rock bands w/ "hot" singers, for whatever god-awful reason).

Popularity has nothing to do with quality.
Part of the reason I like less popular music is because it's always exciting discovering a new band that's relatively obscure.
Besides, the mainstream sucks.
Who loved Dragonforce? Dragonforce have always been terribly generic and repetitive.NecroKvltMuffin
I was about to ask that. I had heard of them before Guitar Hero but I had never heard anyone call them anything other than "some metal band."
I've never liked Dragonforce, Linkin Park is good, Avenged Sevenfold is okay.
People usually dislike bands because they don't have good music. A band can have good music when they start off, but when they get further on they start to make awful music and vice versa.
I first heard of DragonForce on MP3.com I believe. Way back when they were relatively obscure and before their stuff become identical. I still think their first album is quite good though.DFan17902Yeah their first album is decent....the other ones not so much.
It must irk people that a band they dislike gets a lot of attention. The thing is, they seem to think that, because they don't like the band, the band shouldn't be liked by everyone else either.SolidSnake35
It doesn't irk me at all. ZERO. NADA. I'm not forced to sit down and watch mtv at home or listen to the radio when I'm in my car. I have no clue as to what the popular bands/artists are because I pay no attention to it.

I cannot believe what I just read. First of all, pop music is terrible on so many levels. From the lyrics about teenage crushes and other non-sense to the singers incredibly annoying voice, and to top it all off the basic, repetitive beats and chourses. I would kill myself if that was the only type of music ever made.

Then you're not one of those silly people that decides they actually hate those kind of bands.I can't stand bands like Linkin Park or Dragonforce.
I don't give a crap if a band is popular or not. If I like what I'm hearing, then I like what I'm hearing. Simple as that. I'll never pretend to like a band like Dragonforce because all the "Cool" people listen to it - because I don't like following fads.
And so if one can't deal with another for not liking these bands, so be it. Because I don't care what you listen to.
Because everyones preferences are different.
The majority of bands I listen to is:
- Journey
- Scorpions
- Queen
- Genesis
- Led Zeppelin
- Pink Floyd
- Aerosmith
and Black Sabbath...Are they considered popular? You tell me.
KrisG7
Those are exactly the kinds of bands I listen to.
Popular music has a tendancy to lack skill in instrumentation, importance/depth in lyrics, and willingness to attempt to be unconventional in style in order to appeal to the largest number of people possible.
This is why I dislike popular music and why I tend to listen mostly to classic rock of the 60's and 70's. While not all of the music is overly good, it's much easier to find bands that write songs with important messages and require much skill to be able to play.

I think
you're a little naive. Different people think different things are good. Some bands don't have a sound that is marketable to a large amount to people and therefore is not profitable. I don't listen to My Chemical Romance because I don't think they're original and their lyrics are are aimed at lovesick 12 year old girls and wannabe emos. I don't hate them because they're popular, I hate them because of the way the major labels manipulate their music to appeal to a demographic I'm not a part of.
I'll listen to a popular song if it's good. I'll listen to an unpopular song if it's good. With the current trends in music the definitions of "good" and "bad" music become even more unclear (the speed of a guitar solo is no longer a tell-all meter of a bands talent). "Indie" is such an overused word and if you'd loosen up a bit about listening to music outside of your comfort zone you'd be happier.
Ok it depends, some people hate some popular bands because they actually suck, OR people have different tastes, OR they used to like them but then the band changed their style or sound that they don't appeal to them anymore.
Also, there are some people who think it's "coool" to hate popular bands and be different than everybody else.

I've seen that before, it's pretty funny.
A7X and LP became terrible and there are better bands than them.
And Dragonforce isn't that bad but all their songs are the same.
