I've studied his guerrilla warfare tactics, even US Marine Corps Major Larry Bockman called some of his strategies "Brilliant". But the more I've read about the real life of Che Guevara, the more disturbing facts come to the surface.
-He routinely personally executed his own men who were accused of being "spies".
-He sent execution death squads to ruthlessly murder his own men who deserted, along with enemy troops as they tried to escape.
-He played a major role in getting Cuba the nuclear armed ballistic missles during the Cuban Missle Crisis and stated, "If they had been under Cuban control, we would have fired them off".
-He personally executed hundreds of Batista supporters and loyalists after the overthrow of the Cuban government.

So my question is: Why is his face all over T-Shirts I see at my friends' college campuses here in America? Do people actually know who he REALLY was, or is it just a symbol they think is cool?

IMO Guevara wasn't a military hero, a revolutionary (his idealogy failed) or a symbol to be praised. What do you think?

Agreed. It's just another shirt for idealistic kids to wear, like those who wear Ramones shirts and not even knowing what they are.

98% of the people who wear the shirt have no idea who he is or what he did, they just see it as fashionable.

I think it's a case of reverse psychology. People hear him being blasted by some of the biggest blowhard pundits and politicians and think "If those guys hate him, I'd probably love him".

Though he is awesome as the narrator of 'Evita.' Especially when played by Mandy Patinkin. >_>

Do you mean the people who wear his face on a T-shirt? Yea, I'm guessing about 90% of those people have no idea who he was. I have a very basic idea (Argentinian guerrilla military leader, I think he rebelled against them, something with communism).

Maybe if you did your homework on the man you'd see I have a valid point.

Whether you agree with his Marxist ideals ( i personally don't, but to each his own) you've gotta agree that killing people ruthlessly (including retreating enemy combatants, something a true soldier doesn't do, there's no honor in it IMO) isn't a thing to look at as being "revolutionary".

Why do cubans revere Castro so much when the guy has always been a hardcore buttsauce? Seriously, it's like the people over there don't know any better and the only politician they know is him, and that's why they like him...Claiming he "did so much for our country"...Wow...Seriously talk about being screwed up in the head from propaganda being feed every meal for you whole life...Yeesh.

I think everyone just knows who he was and thinks of him as a hero for the people without actually knowing what he did or what a revolutionist really does. Same with those classic rock tshirts people wear especially the Ramones ones

Exactly. We revere our military heroes because they don't behave like this. We put our coward deserters on trial, not massacre them. Huge difference.

Side note, Washington was the man but you wanna know a great unsung hero of The Revolutionary War? Marquis de Lafayette. Higher education showed me how bad*** that guy truly was, stupid public high school didn't even mention him!:x

No, it's just a generalization (this topic makes sense). No offense, it's just that I want to hang myself during most of your threads because you're so quick to object and usually have a fogged-up head.

I've seen it before, I dunno what the guy's thinking. Have you seen the Obama fan art where he's made to look like the Che T-Shirts?

I seriously can't believe how blatent he makes his socialist views apparent to anyone who wants to see, but nobody seems to care. It's a real head scratcher.

well, george washington killed a good number of people too, but you don't see us angry proletariats starting threads about it

alexeduardo

Unless I'm mistaken, George Washington wasn't a ruthless dictator who killed his own people. >_>

At least that's what you've been taught

I notice you don't provide any examples to prove me wrong. >_>

maybe because there aint any

So... your point is...? >_>

that if you go to cuba you'll find plenty of examples

Bro don't waist your time with them, they don't know what Che really did.

I'm not even talking about Che right now. >_>

I'll concede that Che did alot of things to help, but I can't condone the ruthlessness of some of his actions. >_>

He was one great physician who went to an island full of people with leprosy, just to treat them.

He wrote books about medicine.

He wanted social equality.

And...I dont have those shirts because they are for posers

fanboy-buster

Here is someone that knows everything about him.

I have two books about the life of the Che, I have yet to read the second one.

I've read about his medical work for his people, it's noble stuff I'll admit. But I hate that people try to make excuses for the ruthless brutality of the man based on the fact that he did SOME good in his life in the beginning.

It's like, if I cured diseases like AIDS but then later in life murdered hundreds of people. Would I go down in History as a genius who helped his fellow man, or as the murderer I became? Some good deeds don't simply erase a lot of bad ones.

Read about The New Deal and The Great Society. More liberal ideals, more failures. :lol:MarineJcksn
Right, as opposed to such brilliant conservative ideologies such as 'Reaganomics' and 'leaving it to the private sector' >_>

Right. A policy that skyrocketed our deficit and another which essentially amounted to "screw all y'all." >_>
