I never understood this. I always hear people say "don't cry, be a man" Do men not have feelings or something??

I've cried before, and I don't think there is anything wrong with it. If someone doesn't cry if something bad has happened like someone dying, I usually think that person doesn't care about what happened.

I don't really believe a man is sensetive if he cries, it's normal to show your feelings when something bad has happened.
It's weird not to.

So how come people think men can't cry??
Do you think people who don't cry just don't have feelings and don't care about anything bad that happens?

The people that think like that are usually very ignorant, very religious, and think they are the macho alpha.

I think everybody's got their own way of dealing with grief. Some cry, some don't.

And yeah, the idea that men shouldn't cry is pretty stupid. I haven't cried in a very long time, but if I ever felt the need to, I definitely wouldn't be ashamed of it.

It is well known fact that for each tear a man sheds, he loses approximately 5 man points.

That saying is usually used when a boy is being a drama queen. There's justified crying and there's unjustified crying. It's natural to cry at a funeral but it's a whole 'nother thing to cry when your mom won't get you the latest Bring Me The Horizon album.

Sometimes a person can act like a wuss-- that's when the "be a man" thing works because they are being a child.

My father never let me cry when I was younger. "Not a man thing to do, son." (He had methods of reinforcement.) The "alpha" gene is integrated into my being now. And, as my father used to say, "Don't let them see you cry, boy. Never , ever let `em see you cry. And if you're alone, and you cry, think of wounds, salt, and alcohol." "Tee-hee."

I think not crying is bad though.
Some men can have depression but if they hide in their feelings they will never tell anyone they have depression, so they won't get help.

I heard thats why the suicide rate is higher for men.

it is a society thing media depicts it and people buy it. People see the man as the protector and therefore unemotional in his duties and it is fed to us by everyone our parents, grandparents, media men are supposed to be able to do anything without feeling and therefore are powerful over women and children because they are emotionless. Really though it's dumb all people have emotions and all people feel the need to share those emotions and when they don't it causes problems for everyone it's a dumb idea that men should not cry and a dumber thing that people pass this ideology downt otheir children without even thinking about it. Lets hope that someoday it goes away and we can all be emotionaly free to feel how we need to.

You can always express yourself in some bizarre way that doesn't include moisture of the eyes. I, for example, tend to write a lot. Usually on the darker side of things. Others play video games like there is no tomorrow. And I don't think the fact that men don't cry is the reason for those suicide rates. It's really more loneliness. You need someone to hear you out, to really listen . . . to supply advice. Human contact is the cure to depression. Real contact, on an emotional level. (Not that I need it. I hate humans. I hate crying. I hate everything but myself and how I live my life.) Ahem . . . anyway . . .

So what about when girls label crying guys "crybabies"? I doubt girls are being motivated by "machismo insecurity"

EDIT: And frankly, I don't think the relevant subject should be about whether guys "should" cry or not, but that sometimes guys can't help it ANYWAY.

I think it's okay to cry no matter what gender you are.

Just as long as you don't cry too much.

Then I just think you're a baby regardless of what gender you are.

If a girl labels some guy a "cry baby," she just isn't a very nice person--or is joking. And I can honestly tell you that girls do like the leakage of emotions in a man. It means he could put himself in her shoes more often than someone who's too masculine.

well just a thought but he is right to a point GIRLS now a days are meaner then boys and are know to even be more violent then boys so seeing this play out wouldn't surprise me. Yet mature young women would know better then to label a man/boy a cry baby or call them a crybaby.

Well if somebody is an overemotional whiny person that just annoys everyone I wouldn't be surprised if they get called a crybaby.

Men shouldn't cry, unless someone very close to them has died or they've just won the world series; otherwise, it's rather feminine and weak to be so effusive and weakly sentimental.

Men should cry, that way they don't hold everything in.

If someone cries a lot it does not mean they are weak, it means they don't hold their feelings in, which is a good thing.

... are you seriously suggesting girls don't do that? I specifically recall a particular girl in elementary school calling me a crybaby on separate occasions when I ended up crying, couldn't help it, tried to keep it to myself, and yet some people noticed it and told everyone else. -.-

Well I don't know what happened to you cause you didn't get into it. Personally I thought I was going to cry once (not from physical injury) but got over it. I find myself only crying when I'm alone. Usually it happens after a long interval where I just kind of break down for a few minutes.

Sorry about the confusion. I thought it was another user, but now I realize it was just another post by you. I guess I'm not thinking straight today. Anyway, your post "So what about when girls label crying guys "crybabies"? ", was in the present-tense, implying that it was happening to you. I can assume by posts I have read by you that you are at least in your late teens, it seemed strange for girls that age to behave that way.

I'm 19 actually, not sure if it says so in my profile though. Anyway, I don't know whether girls my age do that or not, but I fail to see how "when girls label crying guys crybabies" qualifies as being in the present tense. In any case, my point was more so in response to foxhound fox claiming that it's all about macho insecurity; I doubt that's the case when it involves little girls insulting little boys for crying.

Those girls obviously don't know what a real man is.

Men are human. Humans have emotions by nature. It is natural and perfectly alright to express those emotions. It is how we communicate with others, and just covering up or locking away those emotions does bad things to our mental health.

Men shouldn't cry, unless someone very close to them has died or they've just won the world series; otherwise, it's rather feminine and weak to be so effusive and weakly sentimental.bt_the_great_78

I bet there are some "feminine and weak" men out there who would be more willing to stand up against adversity than someone who puts on a machismo facade just to seem more like a man but is so insecure and weak on the inside, they couldn't stand up for anything.

Do you see Rambo crying? Hell no. All true warriors hide their feelings/have none.

It isn't the "macho" thing to do. Apparently guys aren't supposed to cry, but girls like guys with a sensitive side. At least I do.

It depends on what you mean by cry. If you mean cry due to emotions then yes it would be seen as a sign of weakness. Now, if you mean cry due to sudden intense pain (i.e. hard kick to the groin) then I'd give a guy a pass on that one.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a man crying.
