Then they feel guilty when they overindulge in food? Why sweets or chocolate instead of baby carrots or fruits?

Also i was watching this program on TLC about obese people, and they said that they eat fatty foods to forget that they are fat and can't move... *facepalm* Its going to be a never ending cycle then! Why not eat vegetables and fruits till you can move?

Point: Why is food so powerful like that?

You want to treat yourself to something like that when you are depressed because you think it is going to make you feel better. It doesn't.

Eating food causes a sense of statisfaction, resulting in positive thinking. The moment is short lived though, a sense of regret is incoming soon.

I turn to alcohol and nicotine myself, but nothing wrong with turning to whatever makes you feel good (which is ice cream for some people).

It's not food, the food is the coping mechanism that they use which makes them feel better for what they are dealing with in my opinion.

For me I don't eat or sleep. Not healthy.

They need to become big and strong to deal with their problems, so they eat food to become big and strong.

The thing with chocolates is that they have endorphins which are the body's natural painkillers. SO it's no wonder people indulge in them because it dulls the pain(emotionally or mentally)

I turn to food when Im feeling down. In my house, cooking/meals/excellent food were around me all the time (greek... what do you expect). Meal time was always a huge comfort. So, I turn to food because It always made me happy.

I do the opposite, I feel like the problems might be occurring because I'm a fat fatty and I eat significantly less so I feel better about myself.

I eat less when I'm depressed, but they eat it because they subconsciously, think it will make them feel better.

People do dumb stuff to cheer themselves up, it usually only works in the short term which then leads to physiological addiction.

It's a really old response, like imbedded in DNA. It's also why dogs get greedy when they get older because in millions of years in evolution the older dogs were fed last or killed first so it is just a natural reaction. Food is a fulfilling and pleasurable thing to have even in our days of having fridges and freezers full, and people looking like blimps walking around. It's called "Comfort food" for a reason, it's rich, tasty and would be the most immediate thing you want when you're starving. It's just natural to want to feel better and food is hardwired in our heads to make us feel better.

Primordial instinct. We get hungry so we will want to eat so that we can replenish vitamins and nutrients and whatever else. When we get sad we want to eat because eating usually makes us feel good for the aforementioned reason.

Eating can take your mind off the stress and can temporally release hormones that give short term happiness.

I for one have the opposite problem. I can't eat when Im stressed. On my last big break up I lost 20 lbs.

Works like a drug, your brain releases substances in response to food that makes you feel better temporarily. When the effect wears off they eat again and so on... That's basically the same thing with most addictions.

Probably the same reason why people turn to drugs orother addictive things. They want something that'll help them escape from the suffering that they're going through.

Because eating away your sorrow is so much more tasty than suicide. Seriously. And that's why I don't cry into a bag of baby carrots, I cry into warm brownies. I'm not even obese or particularly large even, but food that happens to be unhealthy is often a mood booster and because nobody describes vegetables as 'decadent' or 'sinful'. Yummy 'treat' foods make us feel better because we have something to enjoy when life is ****. Unfortunately some people get into a cycle of fail and end up weighing a couple hundred pounds because they're sad too much.

They do it because they lack even more self control when they're emotional. There are much more productive/healthy ways to feel better about yourself when you're down. One of those being exercise. But most people shy away from that and would rather go the unhealthy, easy route.
