Why do people type like this?

This has always bothered me. When typing for online things, like Facebook statuses or IM's, some people tend to insert extra letters in words. For example, they'll say "heyyyy" or "yepp" or "this research papeerr is killinggg meeeee." It's usually girls that do this. Does this bother anyone else?

Doesn't really bother me to tell you the truth and besides it's just letters. If you're in highschool and a little smarter then most (maybe not in classes but life smart) then teenage spelling is bound to be a bit annoying especially if you can spell.

I type what I think and I think like I talk... sometimes if I want to say hey and want some emotion/emphasis on it then that would be a reason for multiple letters. Otherwise, I dont do it.Sajedene

It's not annoying. It makes the word sound different. Like dragging out the letter.

I do it all the time. I'm really new here so I'm sorta wary on showing my more feminine side hehe...

Its definitely not worse than people who say "Lulz" or "lulzorz"

Emphasis. Typing "this class is killing me" doesn't show as much emotion as "this class is killlingggg meeee." At least, that's my understanding, I could be completely wrong. :PLZ71

Lets be fair and say that some of it is for the actual sound a word makes...You try singing the imagination song from south park without changing the spelling.
