Why do people use "lol" so gratuitously?

It's become a filler word. Most of the times I see it typed don't even make sense when used in the original context. It annoys me to see it in every sentence when it doesn't even fit. Anyone else annoyed by this?FalcoLX

I felt the same way about "ZOMG," atleast lol makes sense. ZOMG is just a term used by some 11 year old in an AOL chat room somewhere and became the desperate-to-sound-internet-cool word of the decade.bugtrip

I rarely use it. It seems people just get so used to using it, it always is just there. Plus, they don't always want everything to be taken so seriously. Like when they are being sarcastic. It is like, "Yeah, I am sure he did that, lol" It is kind of annoying when it is used too much. I will usually just use an emoticon. ":lol:"

(which I have noticed I use ":P" too often)

No. it's because when people use the shift key to type "OMG", their finger will sometimes hit the Z key, thus creating the typo "ZOMG".

Btw, the Z and O keys are far apart. What kind of keyboard do you use?
