Some people obviously haven't looked into progressive metal, power metal, or symphonic metal. There's so much more to metal then death metal, nu-metal, metalcore, and thrash metal, there are quite a few bands that make some beautiful music but still have awesome songs to get the head banging.

Kamelot
Symphony X
Dream Theater
Blind Guardian
Firewind
Adagio
Nightwish
Epica
Within Temptation
Pagan's Mind
Dream Evil
Mystic Prophecy

All good options

-Austin-

All of those bands are cheesy as hell.

Thanks for the opinion. I can say as a fact those bands are great, and I'm betting you haven't listened to them.

as a fact? I have listened to them and I thought they sucked. It's just my opinion. Music is subjective - different people look for different things.

Death Metal/Screamo ruined the name of Metal. It turns so many people off the genre even though they are barely part of the genre anyway.

Heavy Metal/Trash Metal is what true metal is about, unfortunatly that well has dried up for quite some time and we are left listening to 20 year old CD's.

When people think metal they should think, Iron Mainden, Metallica, Megadeth. Not Korn or Slipknot.

I'm sorry, what? necrophagist ruined the name of metal?

How is power metal NOT cheesy?

Oh and the only bands there I have never heard are the bottom three.

But not all those bands are power metal, and the ones that are like Blind Guardian, are much better then the cheesiness that most other power metal bands are like Rhapsody and Dragonforce. It doesn't get much cheesier then those 2.

SlickAndKick made 2 topics like this within 10 minutes, so i figured i'd make one to :Pbut seriously, why are there so many people that hate metal? to those people that do hate metal, have you heard anything other than death/black metal? because imo those are some of the worst sub genres of metal

PS: don't just say "METAL IS TEH SUXORS" actually give a legitimate reason why you don't like metal.

dante_123456

I listen to metal. I play metal. I love metal. Pretty much there are only a few things that can make/break metal for me. The lyrics (if they suck, get 'em the **** out), the vocals (the singer's voice has to be tolerable), the guitar[s] (if it's so deep you can't distinguish between notes, what's the point?), and the drums (you gotta do more than crash beats and bass drum rolls, guys. come on).

a lot of people hate it because of the people who listen to it.

being a musical snob was never appealing. not saying you are one, but most metal guys have that tendancy. and as someone who is not only guilty of this, but knows a crap load of metal fans i can say with full conviction that metal snobs are jerks, much like punk snobs are jerks.

also, a lot of it sounds the same. i dont know why, but a lot of metal bands/ppl think its cool when they say "yeah this band sounds like -insert band here-" why is it in the metal community okay to sound like everyone else?

too much satan crap. now obviously its not as bad as it used to be, actually most bands dont even have lyrics about satan anymore, and if they do its not ACTUALLY about satan. but its still pretty bad, and lyrical themes in general get beaten to death.

and finally, nobody cares about shred. if someone is the fastest player alive, they might still might not be as good as some 14 year old kid starting out. creativity is what matters, not speed.

eagles_band

you're comments cannot be taken seriously with that picture, moore is a fat anti american wackjob.

metal takes no talent, its just somebody screaming and a bunch of idiot jumpin around

I find it funny that you dont get it.

anyway, metal takes a lot of talent. its one of the hardest forms of music, especially in the modern era. just because theres about 8 million cookie cutter bands, dosent mean that the few very awesome bands dont have talent. even the bands immitating others still require a certain degree of skill not usually matched by other genres in their respective scenes.

Your article says nothing whatsoever about metal making people smarter. It suggests that intelligent people are attracted to the genre. This is not difficult to understand - there is a greater degree of complexity in metal by comparison to other popular genres, and intelligence is required to understand complexity. What most hear as simply noise makes sense to people who have the capacity to order the sound in real time in their brains. But metal is not the cause of that intelligence, and listening to it is not necessarily going to increase your intelligence any more than listening to any other genre.

I'm intelligent, and I don't care for metal. More than any other popular genre, it attempts to approach the sophistication of classical music in both performance and composition, and yet it always falls short with its uninspiring counterpoint and dull, repetitive motives that are not developed in any way more often than not. I find lengthy metal compositions to be particularly tedious, because these composers do not seem to understand that long compositions must result from a compositional process involving motivic development and a harmonic journey, not from the incessant re-statement of short ideas. I sometimes find metal compositions appealing in the sense of a static mood that they can create... but I can get that in classical music, too, and I can get it with formal ingenuity and a degree of compositional craftsmanship that I have never encountered in metal writing.

pianist

ofcourse metal doens't have the complexity of classical music, it's a form of popular music afterall. Metal doesn't want to be classical music 2.0, it just wants to include some of the things from classical music (some bands do it better, some do it worser, not all include it anyway) So comparing metal on the base that it want's to be like classical music, but fails at it is wrong, since already the first statement on which you base your comparison is wrong. No form of popular music is going to reach classical music anyway.

I think most people hate metal beacose of the screaming/growling, which is actualy a quite complicated way of singing and it is hard to perfect it so that you don't kill your vocal cords in 2 years. And most people have heard "metal" only in the form of Slipknot, Korn and similar stuff (which even isn't metal). And then there is ofcourse all the **** certain metal bands/artist have done that doesn't really help the image of metal (I am looking at you Varg). And the satanism stuff puts a lot of people also off from it, oh and than there is also the elitsm stuff which is extremly presented in people who listen to the more extreme metal (basicly if a band is known by more then 4 people including the band, they suck), which again doesn't help the image of metal. well to each his own I gues. I love metal, I have been to a lot of concerts and festivals and I simply don't find the energy, the happynes and the diversity (spelling?) that I find in metal anywhere else. Ofcourse I listen to other stuff, but metal has been and always is going to be my favorite and it helped me through a lot of strestfull situations just as it accompanied me through a lot of happy times.

I don't know, maybe its howsome ofthe artists make millions of dollars yet they still seem to have something to yell and be angry about.Hellraiser3899

you mean just like rappers living in big Vilas singing about how hard the life in the ghetto is ha? I don't have anything against rap (or any other music form) but ffs that was the probably the most stupid reason for not liking metal I have heard in my entire life. 1. metal is quite unpopular except for some big bands (metallica and iron maiden) so they don't really have a lot of money in the first place. 2. even rich people can get angry, having money doesn't make all your problems get away. So it's much more logical for a rich person ti sing about his anger then about how hard the life in the ghetto is -.-

oh and some examples of for me good metal:

Well it really depends on what you call metal, but in general, it lacks NOTICABLE rythm and if you notice, a lot of the people that like metal are people who play guitar who can hear the different sounds and rythms the guitar makes that most normal people can not.

I personally like metal (not screamo metal tho). but not as much as my friend who plays guitar

Metal obviously isn't meant to sound like cIassical music. But there can be no doubt that it DOES attempt to emulate defining aspects of that genre, and the fact that it is musically more technically complex as a result than most other popular music has always been one of the chief arguing points of metal elitists who wish to believe that metal is far superior to all other popular music on those grounds. It's the fans themselves that often make the incorrect argument that metal is the spiritual successor to cIassical music, and that it matches the level of compositional craftsmanship that you find in cIassical masterworks. And my response in this thread was directed towards an individual who clearly believes that listening to metal music makes a person more intelligent (presumably because it is complex music), and has suggested that people would be less stupid if they started listening to metal.

With that in mind, I'm sure you'll understand why I wrote what I did. It was not to suggest that metal is attempting to be cIassical music 2.0. But if his argument is that the whole world should listen to metal because it makes people more intelligent on account of its complexity, then really, the whole world shouldn't be listening to metal, but rather cIassical, which takes the complexity he was lording over other genres to a much higher level, as you have correctly identified in your post.

For my part, I don't care what people choose to listen to. I really don't think one's listening preferences will increase a person's intelligence. An intelligent person may be drawn to complex music for the intellectual stimulation, but it's not that the music made him or her more intelligent, but rather that he or she was intelligent to begin with, and was thus able to appreciate the complexity of certain kinds of music.

Your smug post using such words like "compositional craftmanship" on a FREAKING TOPIC DEBATING METAL MUSIC makes me want to punch you in the throat. Jesus Christ.

G4mbl3

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot that debating music here is all about using hackneyed catch phrases and baseless assumptions, and that rational arguments that actually address what the person to whom you are responding stated aren't allowed. My bad.

I love it because its the most diverse style and it's evolving constantly. With the way one band on its own can create an entirely new subgenre it's going to continue to diversify at a rapid rate.

Metal is pretty awesome. Metal concerts are really fun, lots of energy in the crowd. It just sucks when you leave and you're all sweaty and gross.
