Why do so many people say the real world after University is more tough?

That doesn't really make sense to me. If somebody is working full time, going to university, paying tutition and other fees, and is young with basically no support from family. How exactly if the real world more rough? That seems to be as shitty as it gets. I have a few friends right now working full time and going to school full time, and worrying about financial problems all the time. They seem like they're literally losing their minds as of recently.

Everyone's financial situation is different. I put myself through uni, but never really felt that poor. The first three years after uni, by contrast, I was utterly skint the whole time.  While at uni, loans are available and you're protected a bit from certain taxes, rental prices and stuff... and when that stops you really feel it. On the positive side though, it does get better.

Kids, marriage, payments, loved ones dying. Granted all that can happen while you're in university (and god help you in that case) but it's less likely just because of the typical age of someone.

People who tend to compensate a lower skill set/intellect with discipline and effort hit a massive brick wall. In real life, they burn up within few years and have to deal with the fact that they wasted years attempting to be someone who they can't be.

When they talk about real world vs university they are making the assumption that you your parents are paying for you.

Basically the real world is when you are 100% on your own.  And yes that is tougher.

Depends, some peoples' parents helped them through college, some people get student loans, some people don't work through college and find it tough to get jobs afterwards. I imagine other people who work through college have a better time at it though, or people who plan their college education around an actual career instead of wasting time on a dead end education. Some people seem to just focus on getting a degree rather than making that degree mean something.

I think what they mean by this is when you graduate Highschool not so much college. When you are in higschool there is a lack of responsibilities and worries that you end up experiencing after graduating. Bills, more accountability, more responsibility, and lack of second chances for the most part.

It's not tough, it just requires some experience and dedication. It's only tough when you make it tough for yourself.

Living it hard is being deprived from education and needed essentials to survive.

Maybe It's tougher because you now have to start doing things for yourself. Once the parents stop paying your way that's when most people start to relize that independance isn't free nor easy....especially in the beginning stages of spreading your wings.

Because all of the first line in terms of the breadth and depth of your personal accountabilities applies after university, plus you eventually get to support other people instead of receiving support from other people. But the biggest difference is there is no end in sight, except death, whereas in university there is a defined start and defined end which makes dealing with whatever problems you have that much easier.

And you can't just state a close to worst case university situation and say that is as bad as it gets. Your example is nothing, a walk in the park, compared to a single mother with a couple of kids, limited education, and working multiple minimum wage jobs just to keep her children alive. Try doing that for a couple of decades.

totally agree. working full-time as opposed to going to school AND trying to make a living (if you're not living with your folks) is much easier.

When most people are in college, they are focused primarily on that. Whatever income they have is often not used for permanent things, such as a mortgage (as opposed to rent). Sticking with the standard college experience, meaning that you finish high school, go on to college and graduate with an associates or bachelors degree while in your early 20's, your responsibilities are somewhat limited. After college, you enter the workforce, ideally in your field of choice, at a starting level. You may also invest in buying a home and/or a car. This alone changes your personal dynamic. Starting level jobs, even in a good field, are often lower paying and less rewarding. When combined with the expenses you have undertaken, the challenge can seem constant and uphill. For me, as I turn 35 this year, I finally feel like I am getting ahead. My mortgage is half paid, my wife and I have no car payments, and we are both established in our fields, enough so that our experience can transfer to other employers. From 24 - 34, this never really seemed to be the case, as just making ends meet at times wasn't easy. My experience is not unique, and some of the sentiment you are talking about can be represented in similar ways.

A lot of kids in college are privileged. Just focus on school only. But people like me and some others have to work and go to school. So we believe that is bs.

And I'd say a lot of it depends on your job.  I feel I have at least a decent perspective on this situation as I was just talking to someone in their late 30s/early 40s who has gone back to school full time and quit their job.

They were discussing how difficult it was because in school they're learning something completely new everyday, taking it home practicing it into the night etc.  At many jobs you do the exact same thing everyday, with little variation and once you get home you leave work behind you.

Now ofc, high level executive jobs, or in cases where someone owns their own business where work is basically a never-ending thing and they're pretty much always on the clock or working even when not at work, that's a completely different story.

As for people who work standard 40 hr work weeks and nothing more, and still claim the real world is so much tougher, no not really.

Yes, it really is, and I'm saying this as I'm in a p. rigorous engineering undergrad program. Life right now is CAKE compared to working (have taken a a semester off at two different points to work, in addition to working summers - they def. leave you with less time and energy).

The economy right now is crap. Many kids are coming out of college either unable to find work, or they end up taking jobs they could have gotten with a high school diploma. Also, you're going to realize that education really isn't valued all that highly in America. Most employers don't give a crap where you went to school or what you studied. You are not a special snowflake. You may even come to the realization that college was a complete waste of time and money.
