[QUOTE="UniverseIX"][QUOTE="Frame_Dragger"] I understand what you meant, I'm just amazed that you'd take this to such an extreme, assume that even if this were a serious flaw and now a simple question it would be beyond help. He already clearly knows how to fight... Krav Maga will do that. Now he wants to try his hand at a martial art, which frankly is a lot less about practical fighting than overcoming issues, exercise, etc. I mean really, TKD as it's generally not is not what a sane person would want to bring to a serious fight. If you end up grappling, you're going to be totally in over your head. Really, why be so quick to give up on someone based on their asking a simple question? If a teacher can't help you overcome a flaw, then that teacher really REALLY sucks, to put it crudely... especially in a martial art/sport.Frame_Dragger

I told him to give up. That doesn't mean he has to. I would suspect if he's serious about wanting to learn something that he wouldn't give up when some person on the internet tells him too. He can choose to grit his teeth and be more determined to improve himself. I mean, we could coddle him on this, but I don't see the point.

I'm not concered that you just induced him to quit, I'm surprised by your attitude that's all. I'm not looking for a fight here either, I was just surprised that you see this is a fatal flaw, and one that can't be conquered if it were one.

well, I have dwarfism(achondroplasia) so, I take matters of height seriously.

Oooook, I don't see how that has any implication for this thread, but OK. You can't learn to be taller, or not be achondroplastic, but you can learn to change your attitudes, and train yourself to overcome purely psychological limitations. Beyond that, give the history he gives in his OP, I don't think the OP is generally intimidated by height. He was struck by the statistical anomoly in front of him, and then noted what he sees as an advantage in that situation. He may be right, or wrong, but either way given time and dedication he sounds capable of learning the requisite focus and physical skills. After all, he stated outright that he's attracted to the philosophy and exercise elements... it doesn't sound to me like he's trying to become some kind of modern warrior. He basically wants to take TKD for the exact reasons most do, and should be able to benefit from them for the same reasons. Your personal circumstances are such that I'd think you would recognize the difference between inherent physical limitations that require adaptation or endurance, and mental issues which can be overcome.

OK TC,

I've done Muay Thai Kickboxing the last 7 years and i'm 6'1'' and 217-220 pounds, so i'm a pretty big guy you could say, but i train my agility and speed tirelessly and whenever i fight guys smaller than me 9/10 i kick their buts.

First of all Taekwondo is a martial that focuses on kicks, so as other people have said use your long legs, dot try doing complicated spinning back kicks or axe kicks, get yourself a punching bag and everyday train your front kick 100+ times, your sidekick 100+ times, your roundhouse kick 100+ times.

Its better to train one kick 1000 times than a 1000 kicks 1 time, now make sure you set your kicks up, dont just go for a headkick, do a few inside leg kicks with your left leg, nice and fast just snap it in and out, they dont have to be too hard just enough to hurt him abit and get his attention.

Now because you have been chopping at the guys leg a few times the next time you go for a left roundhouse (what you should have been using) aim for his head and just throw it with speed, 7/10 if you throw it fast enough he is going to go to block low because he'll be expecting the leg kick and will leave his head open for you to kick in.

Also everytime they go to kick you dont just stand there and take it or try and dodge out the way, step in and kick the little buggers as hard as you can in their leg, every single time they go for a roundhouse kick you block with your arm and throw your leg staright into their only grounded leg, you make them pay everytime they kick you.

Listen the most important thing is to train your kicks and punches when your at home each day and make sure you make them pay for everythign they throw at you.

On a sidenote i think taekwondo is pretty useless unless you either know other matial arts or your fighting other TKD practitioners, if you want to learn a real martial art that is great in all situations learn Muay Thai Kickboxing.

Because they can do flying back kicks, drop kicks, sweeps, our uppercuts hurt a lot (momentum and force, science stuff). Need I go on?

*kicks TC in the nads and runs away* Like master yoda, all martial arts experts are small so they can jump all over the place and they have better balance.

I'm sure there is somebody below 5'9 that can beat that chump, he's all talk. Especially if we are talking about an unregulated rules fight, where one punch to the throat can kill you.

Hehe.... meanwhile a guy like sonofsmeagle is bruising someone's legs or body with Te chiang, or jaws with khao loi. :P I'd watch them spin around like a dervish then entangle and break wrist and arms. Someone into BJJ would rush them and take them to the ground, and the classic "karate kid" would straight-kick them while out of reach. Of all the advantages smaller people have, flying back kicks and the like are NOT it, nor are punches requiring full extension from a small person, and not from a larger one.

@Meat_Wad_Fan: He does talk a lot, but "all talk"? I think that's a little extreme for a guy who's that large, strong, AND has stamina. He's hardly the god of MMA, or fighting in general, but I know I'd run before standing toe to toe with him. Yeah, maybe I can get fancy on him, and maybe he kicks me once and and my ribs break like matchsticks. The guyis likethe giant in every Bruce Lee flick, who just takes a ridiculous amount of punishment and still smiles. Given that he can take a hit, a solid submission, breaking down the legs with kicks, or a lucky shot to the head seems about all there is. In real life, he's the kind of guy you don't just double-tap with a pistol, you go for a full Mozambique!! He's a monster!

Well, Randy Newman would tell you that they excell because they lack a fear of death, having, "No reason to live." I of course, do not endorse this view, but If I hold in that reference any longer I'll pop.

Becuase many countires where martial arts are still publically popular are in east asia, where average hight is below the western world

There were lots of huge boxers back in the day, but that martial art's popularity dropped like a rock in the west.

If you're doing Tae Kwon Do, which I believe is like 90% kick based, being taller should actually be an advantage for you shouldn't it? Sure short people can kick faster, but since you're taller can't you just use your longer legs to not let them get within range?

Reach is an advantage, but so is speed. When you consider that a kick from a short person still packs a HUGE punch, unless you're a pro-fighter it's tough. Something like Kung Fu, or Muay Thai that uses the whole body and isn't so... fancy... without being effective is IMO the better way to go. Still, I'm biased heavily toward Kung Fu (matis/monkey) for the philosophy and technique, then police-type Krav Maga for practical self defense. Muay Thai is amazing, but the training required, and the sheer violence is more than I care for... still... I greatly respect it.
