the government is trying to take away more and more rights. But the attitude is still there. Thats what really counts.

The thing is, although its going away we still have more individual rights than other countries.

Most other countries see freedom FROM

we see freedom of. We still have the right to have our own business the way we choose it. Most of europe has no real choice in that realm.

Unfortunately, that is deteriorating in the us as well. Mostly through bs anti-piracy laws, patents, corporate welfare and abuse of copyrights

quiglythegreat

the problem with that is that most Americans are not entrepreneurs. I guess this gets back to if people are secure in their property in such, but even then, it's indisputable that everyone must be provided for for there to be true freedom. without socialized education, there cannot be equality of employment, and subsequently, no equality of employment or possession of material goods. now, that may mean 'freedom' in that the wealthy are not kept from their spoils, but it ceratinly means inequality when some hard workers live with little bread on their tables while their fat cat bosses reap their benefit. in any event, Americans do not have so much economic oppurtunity as is imagined.

1. More Americans would be entrepreneurs if it was easier to become one. If you didnt have to file endless tax forms and get permits that shouldnt be needed youd see a lot more up and coming businesses.

2.No they dont need to be provided for true freedom. Freedom has nothing to do with being provided, or given anything. In freedom, youre given the opprotunity to become the most you can. Its like saying windows is more free than linux. Freedom is harder than socialism. But its worth it. Linux dosent GIVE you anything, YOU give it everything and YOU get the benefit from it. Windows GIVES you everything, and Windows SUCKS.

3. Socialized education fails. America proves this. I think the idea of having taxes pay for education is a happy medium. but we cant have the system we have now. Not only does it need to be eradicated we CANT have it anymore! its too costly and its counter productive. We need vouchers where money is attatched to the kid, so they can goto any school they want. Schools MUST compete. This way, schools must produce smart kids otherwise they close. And its not a big deal to the student because he can goto any other school. I lived in a town of about 1,000 - 2,000 people and we have 4 schools and if we had competition more schools would open. This is the only tax based education system that would ever work.

4.Equality has nothing to do with freedom. People by nature are not equal. If you'rebest for the job YOU will be hired. Not the guy who needs it more. Unless the employer chooses to do that. Choice is freedom. Not convienience.

5. The only way corporate fat cats dominate society is with government help. Look at the state america is in now. All government assisted. Good job democrats and neocons.

So, let me make this very clear. CHOICE is freedom. CONVIENIENCE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FREEDOM.

I dont need them, everyone knows europe is more socialist than we are. They readily admit this.

I find it funny so many people claim Americans to be over patriotic, yet I seem to see many more Americans claim that their country isn't perfect while more people from other countries seem to claim more often that their country is the greatest ever.

You are not getting what I am trying to say here. I understand the idea of improving a country because another one is better off, but what is the point of a bunch of patriots saying how America is the best country in the world? What is the point of anyone who can't change a country that is worse off saying their country is superior? What does it solve? It just makes you seem very arrogant if you say how great your country is.

Yes, I agree big time with number one. My dad always talks about how hard it is to have a business within the city because of all the permits and legal work.

I love my country, but I certainly dont think we're the best. Our economy is crap, and we go where we dont belong unfortunately.

Although I do think we have alot of freedoms that people take for granted.

I blame the school system (like I always do). They spend all the time in your first 10 years of school teaching you about ancient history and the middle ages and stuff instead of teaching you about what the world is like TODAY (you know, the stuff that is actually useful). They teach the kids about how great and revolutionary and free America was when it was founded, and maybe they were right. It was a new thing. Back in 1775 or whenever it was it formed. Now, we're about average as far as liberty and freedom go.

Of course America is the best country, and land of the free. That's why every 1 in 100 US citizen has spent time in jail. That's why you get equally as much jail time for pirating music and videos as you do for raping someone. That's why our government can search your possessions, tap your phone lines, and arrest you without cause or a warrant.

[QUOTE="Masinai"]America: Not the best country in the world. A big nono. :|SylentButDeadly

what is then?

to tc: i can go tell bush to go **** off and not die, thats more than some countries can say

I'm pretty sure other countries have freedom of speach too:| Also why should there be a best country in the world? They all have their ups and downs, why does it have to be a competition?

why shouldnt there be a best counttry in the world, and why shouldnt citizens of their country think theirs is the best?

But what is the point? Its all opinion anyway, why does everything have to be a competition, why cant you just live and say that you love your country? There is no need and no point to saying my country is better than your country. That is just childlike and immature, are you really so insecure that you need to validate your own existance and life where you live by saying your country is the best in the world? If so then that is both pathetic and arrogant.

because competition makes things better, if your country sucked and i came and showed you that my country owned your country you would strive to improve, right?

how am i being immature about it?

Because having to say that you think you live in the best country in the world sounds no different than you saying my house is better than yours or my TV is better than yours. It is childlike and it doesnt need to be said, there is no best country in the world. if you love your country fine but dont be arrogant and say its the best in the world.

how can you say that there is no best country in the world, there has to be, would you say nigeria and the uk are the same and that you would be fine living in either one?

you also didnt deny that it can create better countries

You are not getting what I am trying to say here. I understand the idea of improving a country because another one is better off, but what is the point of a bunch of patriots saying how America is the best country in the world? What is the point of anyone who can't change a country that is worse off saying their country is superior? What does it solve? It just makes you seem very arrogant if you say how great your country is.

What is the point of you saying that we are wrong for loving our country?

I live in the US too, but it dosen't mean it's the greatest in the universe. There alot of states out there. I don't blame you for saying that our country is the greatest, because you not only live in your country, but you love it. I'm just saying, stop being so childish. Just because the US is rich in history you should be proud of, dosen't mean it's the greatest.

There are many reasons why people think the US has the most freedom. Most people dont know what true freedom is. They take for granted almost anything and think that freedom means "More Stuff". Also America is labeled in America as the free'est country on the planet, which is again not true.

I never said that, its fine to love your country, but when it gets to the point of you saying that your country is the best in the world then it creates some problems. It makes you seem arrogant and some may see it as ignorant.

Bingo! You get offened when we say it. Its like getting offended when someone calls you a moron. Apparently you think we are the best if you get offended when we say it.

I missworded myself. The US has just the same amount of freedom as countries like the UK and Canada but It doesn't have more freedom so to speak.

I think anyone could say that they are "most free" in any country they choose, because the concept of freedom is relative.

True. Like Chinese citizens are free from the burden of making their own decisions.

...that was supposed to be a joke and seemed funnier before I typed it out.

freedom isnt relative. freedom is choice. if you dont have a choice to live the way you want to, you arent free.

this includes america, and also says theres no free nation anymore.

It is relative what actual freedom is. You can't say a country is the most free because someone else's concept of freedom will always be different. We talked for weeks about this in Philosophy class last semester.

then your class was full of it. everyones idea of free is different and thats why everyone should be able to live their individual lives the way they see fit. that is choice, that is freedom.

But not everyone can live their life the way they see fit. Some people would like to kill anyone who disagrees with them, and not allowing them to do so infringes on their freedom. So as far as I know that person cannot live by their view of freedom anywhere.

From what I understand, in a lot of other countries with suppossed freedom find it very difficult to break into a new class. Meaning, whatever class you were born in, you will probably die in. In the USA, you can make as much money as you want to. Class doesn't really mean much here.

This was told to me by one of my parents friends, who is Iranian. He lived in a few "free" countries before moving to the U.S.A. and opening two dentist offices and making millions.

At one time i think we did but it has been going down down down within the last...70 years. When i can open a business in my garage without tons of government regulations and building codes and being arrested i will say we have more freedom than other countries (unless they can do it there too) but at this point i say we are getting closer and closer to just becoming any other country.

everyone has individual rights. if you infringe those rights you will suffer cconsequence. so the individual rights argument is still freedom.

freedom isnt easy. but that dosent mean you should settle for less.

America's fight for independence created democracy as exists in many countries on the planet, but America has strayed far from its past, and it seems that Europe and Scandinavia (and arguably Canada and Australia, among others) are the ones who have actually been improving democracy. It's a shame that many of us Americans blindly patriotize everything about our country.

Come to think of it, TIME magazine did a story about a year ago that included a world map, and rated all of the world's countries on a 'general freedom' principle. I remember that the U.S. got a rating of 83% and Denmark topped it off with 100%, followed closely by The Netherlands and all those Scandinavian countries.

america set the standard for human rights and was inspirational for the development of the rule of law. america has been the best thing to ever happen to the world....but that was awhile ago. now we are just another country.

but as for freedom, i think we do have the most freedom in general. gun rights, property rights, states rights in general. we have plenty of flaws, but america is still admirable. it is pretty arogant to say we are the greatest country though.

but they also consider things such as welfare as an increase in freedom, when it is actually the opposite. so to even have a study of "freedom", you have to first understand it...which most do not.
