because google always brings up a lot of porn and funny pictures when you type innocent things into the search bar. And everyone loves both of those things.
Because it gets the job done. If it isn't broken, it doesn't need fixing. I have never found myself unable to locate what I need using Google. I really don't care if there's a 'better' alternative.
Google is like In'N'Out: it has less features but it just rocks at what it does best (search and hamburgers respectively). lol
Technically speaking, Google has superior algorithms for finding what you want and has a better success rate. Consequently more advertisers use Google which gives it more money.
Like others have said, it's just a combination of simplicity and habit because when you search for something you want it fast with no bs, and Google just happens to be there (despite the fact that by default it comes up with Firefox). That's the whole reason behind it, but I do sometimes when looking for really obscure or specific things find that other search engines sometimes do a better job. But that's generally rare.
