Why does smoking make you look cooler?

Usually when I see a person smoking I just see black lungs.

Julian Casablancas looks so cool when he smokes. It's terrible for you, but when he's putting cigarettes out on stage, it looks so cool

Some people didn't understand that this wasn't a question about health. That's exactly why you people aren't cool and don't understand cool stuff. You see smoking doesn't really make you cool and you shouldn't start smoking for that reason. I smoke because... well I don't remember. However I like it. Anyway, let me explain. A cigarette draws attention from the actual face of the person. It's like a small accessory. Whether you're holding it in your hand or you have it in your mouth it's there. It's like a new point of interest. Like glasses. Some people look a lot cooler with glasses on since glasses make the face look symmetrical (human eye loves symmetry) and draw attention from any flaws of the face (big nose, small eyes etc.). Same goes for beards/haircuts and even cigars. It's there. It's a small detail. The human eye likes details. It's just the way it's made. Compare yourself while wearing a watch and while not wearing a watch. You'll look better with the watch (assuming you don't have an ugly watch). So the reason why people who smoke LOOK cool is simply esthetics. It may not be healthy, but a cigar and the smoke around gives you an interesting, cool, badas* look.iskeethunters

If you see someone smoking outside a building, huddling and cold you don't think that person is cool. You think "that guy clearly has an addiction problem because he does not look like he enjoys being in that situation but is there because of his uncontrollable habit.

On the other hand, confident people can look quite cool smoking. A confident looking smoker tells you "I'm a person who knows what I like. I know its unhealthy but that's a cost-benefit comparison I've considered, and made a decision. I'm not bothered by the health risks, and I don't care what society/other people think of me. I know what I like and I'm doing exactly what I want to be doing. That's power and power is cool.
