What I mean is white people = caucasian, mexican/puerto rican/nicaraguan/etc = hispanic, chinese/japanese/etc = asian, regardless of country they were born in those terms refer to the race as a whole.
Why haven't they invented a term that makes sense to refer to black people?
African/Jamacan/Haitan/etc all = African American. Black person born in any country on earth = African American
Really, can't they think of something that doesn't sound stupid?
MrGeezer
I know several white people who take pride in their Irish/German/etc heritage.
How is this any different than a black dude who doesn't want to get lumped in with all other blacks?
Clearly because taking pride in something that had nothing to do with you or had any control of is a character builder.. Its ok to be mildly interested in it, but its something thats completely out of your control..
That being said "African American" is a warped word that people think is interchangable with black.. This may be rationale if it were not due to the fact blacks are one of a few races within the continent, as long as written history goes..
Pride: 1. a high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind oras displayed in bearing, conduct, etc. By this definition I would say having pride in your country or heritage is quite silly when you were more or lessa accident on who you are today..
