Why don't black people have a universal term that refers to their race?

Not all African-Americans are what you could refer to as "black" the closest to black are the untouchable caste in India who are so dark skinned they could be referred to as midnight blue. and I don't understand why it is such a big deal - people should be referred to by the term they prefer.

I've never seen it as a big deal. It's white/black. I don't think I've ever publicly met someone who got offended at either word. And if I did, I'd just say sorry, ask what term they prefer, and then use that when referring to his/her race.

Works the same way for blacks and whites. Just use "black" or "white" unless the person in question finds that offensive (which in my personal experience, is exactly never).
