They've become fairly well known in the Metal world. They're Progressive Metal, so, pretty much every extreme Metal fan considers them completely boring. While the average listener wont understand most of their instrumental arrangements and ideas. So, they're a bit of an acquired taste. I like them a lot though, second only to the band Pain of Salvation, as Prog Metal goes. I think many people who dislike them may need to give them a better chance too, especially their older work like Awake and Metropolis 2. I certainly didn't like them at first. But they grew on me a whole lot. They also include, who is in my opinion, the greatest keyboard player pretty much ever, Jordan Rudess. He's become a huge inspiration for me.dhyce
The only song of theirs I really liked was 'Constant Motion', probably because it has more of a power metal sound to it, or at least a sound I enjoy listening to.

Yeah, that's from their new album. With that Train of Thought Thrashy sound. I'm not super fond of the song, it's sort of their "hit" on the new album. After paying a ton of attention to the new album I'm not jumping out of my skin about anything from it, I mean, instrumentally it's all pretty impressive and most of In The Prescence of Enemies is great, but I can't get over how far they're slipping lyrically. Their passion levels have dipped big time.

I hope their next album is a little more personal and innovative, they certainly don't need another "safe release."

I'd hate to say they should take a page or two from Pain of Salvation's game plan, but pretty much, they need to get bold again. Naturally they do still put way more musically in their songs than most artists put in an entire album, but it all seems like a waste when their concepts and lyrics don't come anywhere near matching that.

I've heard of Dream Theater.

Have you heard of Korpiklaani or Sonata Arctica?

TheTerribleFish

Korpiklaani is awesome. *thinks of a fiddler walking out of an outhouse*

Whoo, high five!

What's the appeal of Korpiklaani? I never got into them.

it's just a nice change, and it's something differen't; they're even more different than most folk metal bands, because they use actual folk instruments (as opposed to using keyboards to imitate the instruments), and they're really catchy. HAPPY LITTLE BOOZER FTW!!! :D

Than you should check out Eluveitie. They play many different weird instruments, and play them awesome.

Here is a song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DYKsQqQgS

i think someone posted that video a few weeks back, great song :D
