I don't recall saying that. IF I did what I meant was that it should open their minds to other possibilities.

BumFluff122

Ahhh you're talking about their beliefs not reality. There I would have to agree with you. It is impossible to change the beliefs of people when they don't want to have their beliefs changed or when they don't want to question alternatives.

BumFluff122

Right here you have assumed that the alternatives could displace beliefs.

Yes...which basically means "science" doesn't know.

LJS9502_basic

I have never said science knew what occurred before the Big Bang. If a scientist claims to know without a doubt what occurred before the Big Bang and what caused the Big Bang he is lieing. We will never know what caused it.

Yeah, thats the vibe I'm getting too. It seems like just because a lot of people aren't Christians go to Hell. I'm not a Christian, but believe in and praise a God, so I go to Hell? Its as if he knows God's judgement better than He does...

Now I would say "does anyone know?" but then Theo would rush to correct me somewhere so... :P

Only God does. We should try to live our lives like Jesus did on Earth, and praise and thank Him. Not praise a book.

LJS9502_basic

You are misunderstanding what I am saying. I never once used the word 'displace'. Just know that there are alternatives. The existence of alternatives has absolutely nothing to do with science.

No. You were saying if they followed science they would see the alternatives were better to paraphrase because I'm not looking for the posts. Thus, it is your opinion that the alternatives displace the beliefs. Even though the alternatives cannot disprove a supernatural being and I'd wager probably never will.

I fell out of it after having it shoved down my throat all my life.

I never felt any pull to be religious and quite frankly I not only have a problem with the way alot of religious people try and force their beliefs on everyone else, but I couldn't praise a God who would send a completely good person to hell for eternity simply for not believing in him.

I don't doubt the possibility that there is a God, but quite frankly I don't care to waste time thinking about that because there is no actual way for us to KNOW anything about the subject.

I figure the best I can do is try and be the best person I can and if there is life after death hopefully I do well...

Okay....... *********************** Baby Bashing "Happy those who seize your children and smash them against a rock." Psalms 137:9 NAB *********************** ^^^^ This excerpt is SO outrageous and blunt, it's hilarious. This obviously HAS to be taken out of context somehow. Therefore this line discredits the entire site.

[QUOTE="TheFlush"]And when it comes to slavery we shouldn't?Ezgam3r
If you're talking about what we consider slavery today as what their talking about, sure. But back in antiquity, slavery was more akin to domestic servitude and were treated as such, except they weren't getting paid. They were feed, clothed, taken care of, protected and lived under the same roof as their masters. They were also able to take part in business, borrow money, and buy their freedom. The "slavery" in the OT/Hebrew Bible was also voluntary. They were taken in and treated like hired workers or temporary residents for 6 years when they will be let free unless they decide themselves that they wish to stay.

I don't know how you read this, but to me, this is quite immoral.

However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way.(Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him. If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. But the slave may plainly declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.' If he does this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever. (Exodus 21:2-6 NLT)

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)

(in orange) Once again, people assume God's judgement. Maybe The Bible says it, but quite frankly, The Bible isn't God.

(in red) If you do that, I'm sure you'll have a good chance at getting to Heaven. Note I said chance, I didn't say he WOULD, for I nor anyone else knows what and how God will judge us after death.

That's exactly how I see it. And the more I see of religion (doesn't matter which one) the more I'm convinced that they're all wrong and there's just nothing.

LJS9502_basic

Interesting because when I read his post I felt he didn't understand Christianity.

Well, youre right. I never read one page of the Bible, and I dont want to. I was raised on it, but very liberally, and never learned in depth what Christianity is really about. So I guess thats a fair statement to say I dont understand it.I dont believe it because I choose not to believe it. Its also because of this that I dont really go to these Religion threads too often, basically because I dont have any good points either way. I just dont care, and have chosen to remain neutral on the subject. I was just sharing my personal story on how I became...well...not a Christian. But if you believe I do no understand it, then feel free to explain, although it seems rather simple to me, just a set of moral guidelines on how to live, really.

LJS9502_basic

You must be reading into what I said. My stance this entire thread was to tell people that there were alteratives and to place your belief unwaveringly in one belief or another is crazy. The alternatives never will disprove a God because there will always be unanswered questions that can easily be explaiend by somethign supernatural and unknown. I have never used the word 'better' in this thread either.

I love it when people say that the Bible tells Christians to stone sinners to death...Such ignorance astounds me.

LikeHaterade
In Mathew 15:1-9 it talks about people who curse their mother or/and father should be put to death.

Jesus's ideals were far from ground breaking as well, so shouldn't we say that we should try to live life like Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato did? Sense their ideas existed a full few centuries earlier than Jesus's.

Ummmm no. I know what stance I take. I have attempted to explain it throughout this thread. My stance is that there are multiple possibilities that are all unproven to how the universe came into being. It is attributed to an all powerful supernatural being by some only because it is unknown. Does that mean that I am saying that there is no possibility of an all powerful supernatural being? No it doesn't. The only statement I am making is that there are other possibililties. I didn't try and disprove anything.

That is a contridiction.. Scientific theory is the cornerstone to science that has to have evidence and proof to substantiate the Scientific theory.

But scientific theory is just the understanding humans have. Thus it's not infallible.

You know what i mean, there are theories without proof. If you want me to say it differently, there are plenty of scientific ideas without any proof.

But there is absoulutely no proof for alternate universes and many many other scientific theories, so it not more illogical, they both require faith without proof, they are both just as illogical

That is a contridiction.. Scientific theory is the cornerstone to science that has to have evidence and proof to substantiate the Scientific theory.

But scientific theory is just the understanding humans have. Thus it's not infallible.

I never suggested that it was infalible.. All I am saying is these theories are made through evidence and proof they have found.... Infact to be a passable scientific theory that has to be falisfiable.

I've stopped going to church but never started calling myself a former Christian, IIRC.

You know what i mean, there are theories without proof. If you want me to say it differently, there are plenty of scientific ideas without any proof.

Let me guess you think the scientific thoeryevolution has no proof?

Much to the chagrin of my girlfriend's mother (who is a devout, evangelical Mennonite; while my girlfriend, fortunately, is an agnostic theist who doesn't even believe Jesus was resurrected), I am not a Christian and never will be. I was baptised and went to church until I was 3 or 4... then from then on never had an interest in religion until late adolescence when I learned about Eastern philosophy. Now I'm an atheist who very much likes the non-theistic monism presented in the Upanishads.

Yes from a human standpoint but it's likely humans will never have all the facts vis a vis supernatural existences and what happens after death. So it has no place in a thread about beleifs.

And then i said there is basically no proof for this and it requires just as much belief as a god does and is just as logical.

magnax1

And to place your belief completely in one without any evidence what-so-ever is even more illogical. Which is the point I am trying to make.

But there is absoulutely no proof for alternate universes and many many other scientific theories, so it not more illogical, they both require faith without proof, they are both just as illogical

To place your unwaveringly belief in one is even more illogical. You have to understand there isn't only one theory that scientists use to postulate how the universe came into being. They don't place their unwavering belief in something without there being any evidence to back it up. They attempt to find the evidence that backs up their theory. Many times scientific hypothesis are proven wrong. Religions, on the other hand, do require unwavering faith without any attempt at proving their beliefs what-so-ever but merely find 'proof' of their belief in the unproven theories of science (And some even doubt the proven theories of science).

...... no, but it is not proven, especially evolution from one species to another. I really dont want to start an arguement about evolution.

[QUOTE="enterawesome"](in orange) Once again, people assume God's judgement. Maybe The Bible says it, but quite frankly, The Bible isn't God.

(in red) If you do that, I'm sure you'll have a good chance at getting to Heaven. Note I said chance, I didn't say he WOULD, for I nor anyone else knows what and how God will judge us after death.

enterawesome

Well this topic was about Christianity so of course I am going to be basing things on the bible for this discussion. I personally don't believe in the bible at all....

And yeah, thats why I said I HOPE I do well. No one has any clue what happens when we die and theres no way for us to know.....

The topic is about whether or not you are religous and why, as said in the TCs first post.

Well in that case the same thinking applies to other religions.

There is no way to tell what happens after we die and anyone who thinks they know is either dead or dumb.

I see no reason why I should waste what could be my only life following some arbitrary rules that I may or may not agree with to try and please someone elses vision of a God who may not even exist.

You are doing it again and I guess you'll tell me you aren't doing it.:? They have no idea how the universe came into being at this tiime...so it's really not a logical idea to believe in it.

Than I will conclude with this.. Yes it has been, the science community has found enough evidence to make that suggestion.. It is the most logical from the data they have.. Evolution is widely accepted in the community as fact amassing more data and evidence than really any theory out there.. YOU don't think it has proven in your eyes.. But the science community seems to think otherwise.

Not counting dead people, for obvious reasons, yeah, it's true. Religion is the table and we're all just making bets.

Theokhoth

Then obviously you guys have the answer, since you can say with definite certainty that nobody out of seven billion (living) people could possibly have an answer.

No, because that's an answer to a different question. Having "an" answer is different to having "the" answer.

How when it can only use what is currently understood at the day. Remember long ago it was scientifically though the sun moved not the earth. Before that it was thought the earth was flat. These are very primitive scientific ideas. Second....humans cannot understand what is not for them to see, hear etc. So the supernatural will not be divined.

There have been many (I think I read somewhere in the region of 50) ocurrences of speciation within our own recorded history.

Nobody really knows, no matter how much discussion there is about it. If somebody claims their belief to be more logical, then they are naive. Live your life, and hope that when you die, all of your questions will be answered.

They have proven they can change, but not from one species to another. All i have to say about all these theories and scientific beliefs is that at one point people believed "facts" like the world was the center of the universe and the world was flat, because they were people and didn't have the technology to prove otherwise. We are in the same place, most of these theories are without proof, like theories about black holes and alternate universes.

I tihnk you're missing the point that Theokhoth made about making those kinds of categorical statements.
