I've seen tons of posts in this forum where people seem so happy and excited that China will eventually become the top superpower. Posters can't wait until they pass the US. So my question is why? Doesn't China have a pretty bad history of human rights violation and oppression of civil rights and freedoms? Is that what people are looking forward to? Hooray for censorship?

Most of the posters who looking forward to the possibility of China surpassing the US are adolescents living in countries outside the US who have a massive inferiority complex about their nationality. If China becomes a superpower then they'll just complain about China too.

They just can't wait for the U.S to fall. People hate America so much that they don't see the reprocussions of the U.S. losing superpower status. Its sad really...

I for one am completely against China's rise to power. But then again, they have a permanent seat on the security counsel... so getting them to stop what they love to do, will be nearly impossible. Unless the Chinese people bring about another revolution and end their oppressors regime. Which is entirely possible given the level the government is going to to censor the internet. As soon as the majority of Chinese people find out they don't have to live like that... the hammer of the Mandate of Heaven will fall.

>>Implying the US doesn't have a bad history

Anyways, I'm not as excited that China is becoming a superpower as I am excited that things around the world are changing. We are in the front rows of history right now in my view and that's what's exciting. Besides the US worldview is already obsolete and dangerous so hopefully a better worldview will emerge from all these things happening.

I think the hope (not that I necessarily agree with it) is that as China continues to grow (in the economic sense) they'll continue to move towards a more capitalistic economy; which in turn will result in a more free, better educated population; which in turn will bring about democratic reform.

Another thing and this is probably the most important one in my book. Ever since we have written memory the "world culture" has been dominated by the "western" mentality. From Greece, to the Romans, to the Spanish, English empires and now the US, everyone of those cultures evolved from an indoeuropean heritage meaning that we are plagued by indoeuropean mentality, which, among other characteristics, is very patriarchal, dualistic and rational oriented. China will be the first big diversion from this pattern. It is probably not the best one but it is a start. I think eastern cultures has a lot to teach us westerners in matters as to how they conceive the world, religion and human nature.

Yeah but they are not a cultural influence. There's a difference between being economically powerful and being the cultural power of the world. Japan just adapted to the western-type of mentality and succeeded economically.

I don't know about that. I'd say Japan has a significant cultural impact on the rest of the world. Just look at half the sigs and avatars in this forum. There's tons of anime, samurai, ninja, etc. stuff that I see all the time. A lot of distorted ideals about "honor" and self sacrifice and all that crap are passed around in this forum as well. There are even groups of young teens who worship the nation of Japan.

PsychoRedFox666

they are not financed by debt, but it is a planned economy so it cannot allocate its resources efficiently or effectively. so they are wasting resources in order to inflate their GDP so they can look stronger than they are, but in reality it is just waste of capitol, they might as well be burning the debt they buy from us. anywho, they cannotmake a bubble with cash, bubbles form when people hop onto trends expecting super growth causing demand to increase making price further increase causing more people to make the bad assumption that this trend will last forever. these projects can be thought as straight asset purchases. or at least that is my opinion on the subject

Yeah but for a cultural influence to be significant it has to permeate to the basic structures of society, not just in pop cultural references. For example I visited Japan last year to visit a research program in the Kyoto University. Even though Kyoto University is one of the most important universities in the world and Japan has a lot of western influence, the japanese view of the world is so different from westerners that most people here think they are very weird or crazy or don't even take them seriously. There are certain types of mentality that go back to the greeks and even before that, which permeate our whole society and which are very difficult to change and, at the same time, are very different to those in japan too. Religion has a lot to do in that regard, our western religions are very different from their eastern religions and the influence of both types of thought is very evident in both cultures.

Man seeing that video just is more proof that a planed economy by a communist government does not work. There is no real allocation of resources. There are people living in horrible condiditons while those apartments go completely unfilled. Crazy.

LOL, the indoeuropeans have probably been the most violent culture in the history of the world and have probably destroyed and assimilated more cultures than all other cultures combined. And before the agricultural revolution lots of cultures were mainly matriarchals. Eastern cultures like Japan are not patriarchal like we assume, they may look like patriarchals but they are quite different from the west, a different kind of patriarchalism or even disguised matriarchalisms.

I don't think there exists a "most violent culture" in the world. Most people always say its another culture. But if you look at world history, war is a common theme throughout different regions and different culture. Those with the means went to war. Whether mesopotamian, egyptian, assyrian, babylonian, greek, roman, ottoman, german, mongol, japanese, korean, english, french, american, etc. Sad, but man likes to fight.

[QUOTE="MetalGear_Ninty"][QUOTE="kuraimen"]Another thing and this is probably the most important one in my book. I think eastern cultures has a lot to teach us westerners in matters as to how they conceive the world, religion and human nature. kuraimen
Oh yeah that pernicious Indoeuropean mentality, y'know, with its freedom of speech, individual liberties and religious freedom. Can't wait until we get rid of that  PS. Also, every society is patriarchal, no matter where you look.

We are talking about now not hundreds of years ago, but I don't see why are you are mentioning violence anyway because every society ever studied has exhibited violence to some extent, the myth of the noble savages who were largely peaceful and harmonious before corrupting western influence is exactly that, a myth. The enemy you so enthusiatically try to identify is not western imperialism but rather human nature. Of course, all humans are unique and different, but history has shown time after time that human societies tend to be violent and patriarchal. You mention Japan, but Japan is largely a patriarchal society, likewise, I've never heard of these preagricultural matriarchal societies you speak of.
