Why is it agains the law to deny the Holocaust?

Just wondering why so many countries slap people with hate crime laws and even go as far as having laws that make it illegal to "FREELY" say that the holocaust never occured..

It did happen. Don't know why that makes it illigal but still...

I don't know why people say it didn't. Just a few weeks ago a survivor came to our school and talked about it. So if what these people are saying (the ones who insist that it didn't happen) this was just some old guy who made up a bunch of crap about his childhood and goes from school to school, telling his made up story to students across the country? I guess it could happen...

Its illegal, because if it weren't and someone said it around some types of people, trouble would ensue. Its dangerous to think that way, and technically, imprisoning people who say that is a way to protect them from their own stupidity.lobodob

It's not illegal in the US but I believe it's illegal in Germany and maybe Austria too. The swastika is also illegal, they have to remove it from ww2 games before they can release them there.

Agreed. I think laws such as this reinforce the disbelief that people may have. Take the Iranian president for example. He mentions this from time to time: "Why is it illegal to question the holocaust? What are they hiding"? People who side with him and believe what he believes are only encouraged to doubt the holocaust even more. Ah well...

And did those bodies amount to six million Jews? People aren't questioning the Holocaust because they're stupid, it's because there is no proof of that many people getting killed.
