Why is it so easy to get money from the government to go to school?

I'm living on my own and can't afford school, which is obvious from my tax form. So the financial aid paid for my classes...great, that's what I wanted in the beginning...but then I see that I got a $1500 check in the mail from my school and I"m kinda surprised by it. I didn't ask to get paid to go to school. I don't feel right for taking it as I don't see the purpose. Can I just return it?

Are you sure that's not part of a loan that you applied for? That you will have to pay back?

It's because they take into account that you will need or may need to pay for gas, food, housing, ect..   Just put the money in your bank account and use it for whatever you need.   Just make sure you don't drop classes or fail them because then they will recalculate your grant and will want some (or all if you completely pull out of college) of that money back.

If it's a grant then it's free money. Spend it how you like. Colleges always do this kind of stuff. I know several people that made extra money from grants. Although you are right. getting paid to go to school when some people leaves thousands and thousands in debt really shows a system that's a little backwards.

Money is valuable. The state worked hard to get that money and it should be used honorably. When government agents come to you, to tell you to pound sand you better well do it. They expect servitude from their hard earned cash that they didn't create from nothing.

Because getting an education adds to human capital (skilled workers). Human capital is a major determinant for companies when deciding which country to invest in.
