Why is murder unacceptable unless we give it another name?

If I asked you if it's okay to kill someone , you would probably say no. Now, say I asked the same question but I added the word war into the mix. "Is it okay to kill someone in a war?", the majority of you would probably respond with yes. . Why is murder socially unacceptable until we call it "war".

What's the difference? It's still killing another human being. Isn't it?

Because a person who voluntarily fights in a war does so with the knowledge and expectation that he may die for his cause. A death is a horrible thing no matter what, but it's much more acceptable to shoot someone who is also trying to shoot you than it is to shoot someone know is posing no one a threat.

War, while terrible and gruesome, is often necessary.

A war can be on anything. Unless you are specifically stating about war and have an organized army then okay.

Oh and

Killings got to be accepted. Murder was the only way that everybody stayed in line. You got out of line, you got whacked. Everybody knew the rules. But sometimes, even if people didn't get out of line, they got whacked. I mean, hits just became a habit for some of the guys. Guys would get into arguments over nothing and before you knew it, one of them was dead. And they were shooting each other all the time. Shooting people was a normal thing. It was no big deal.

Does that mean I can kill someone and say "I was at war with him" and get away with it?

So what if this person was trying to kill you and you kill them instead why is it that the person still goes to jail for it.

War is different. Murder is the taking of an innocent life, those shooting at you are not innocent.

Killing someone and calling it 'war' doesn't work because war is between one social/political group and another. Two guys in a street spinning around in circles with knives=/=war.

Murder is the unjustified killing of an innocent person outside of war.

Killing someone during a war is called survival. It's you or them. That's why they have laws for people who "murder" in self-defense.

If you'd applied this simple logic I'm sure there would be no need for this topic. =)

Murder in my opinion is when you want to kill someone, in War you have no choice, its either you shoot or they will shoot at you and kill you. Your gonna have to fight back.

What if they're shooting at you because their country told them that they're the innocent ones and you aren't? What if both sides have been told by their country's leaders that they're fighting for a "good" cause? People can accept murder when the people being killed are perceived as "evil" by their side, but I don't think every war is actually "good" versus "evil."

You said it yourself, morality is subjective. If both sides are justifying their actions as "good" then how is anyone innocent? War is boys fighting over who is better at going higher on the swings at the playground, except with guns, bombs and weapons of mass destruction and suffering.

That doesn't make morality subjective, it just makes one or both sides wrong.

You don't, unless you used unnessesary force. If it was kill or be killed, then you don't. If he shot and missed, then you have all rights to shoot back, even if you kill him. However, say he had a knife and lunged at you. If you turned around and shot him 3 or more times, that is unessesary force. You would not get murder, though, it would be a much, much lessar crime of 3rd degree manslaughter.
