Now I love to read, I read all the time. From what I've see many people here enjoy it too, but I am baffled by the amount of people at school that can't stand reading. I have actually been laughed at because I read for pleasure, people think it's funny. It really amazes me. Obviously I haven't let the laughing stop me, I read on, and I'm not saying I'm the only one that does, but I certainly believe we are a minority (those that read for pleasure). So who actually likes reading and who ahs noticed the dropping popularity of it?

but it takes effort....effort to use your imagineation....effort to find a book......unlike just turning on a TV and seeing images...or cliking on the web..you have to envision......make a commitment to doing something......

Just because tv, movies and games/internet are more entertaining and don't take as long. Also, if it's something that involves actually learning something, most just turn to the internet. I don't really read but when I do it's just historical books or fiction books of the civil war or WW2 just because I like learning about them.

Meh, reading is overrated, especially reading things with words on paper. Maytag should have kept him mouth shut, we don't need books in the future.

Mean Montag? Actually just finished that book. I almost fear that IS our future in a way, like Captain Beatty said, people stopped reading on our own accord.....

I never thought reading wasn't popular. People read at different times of their lives. In school they have school work to get through so reading is probably low on their things to do list.

Probably because people can just watch TV. I usually find reading boring, unless it's a book that I personally wanted to read myself, but once I start reading it, I get into it and end up enjoying it.

I enjoy reading, but only certain kinds.  I enjoy mainly mythology and informational reading.

One thing i cant stand tho is the basic arch-type "classics" like "The Winter of Our Discontent".  Sorry, but i dont think listening to some man complain about his life, describe his town, and preach to a bunch of cans for 9999999 pages is very fun.....

I enjoy reading articles and stuff like that, but I just can't be consistent with reading a novel, I'll read a bit and then I'll never pick it up again.

Really? I hated To Kill a Mockingbird. I'd much rather read something more interesting, it had a dull plot, I still can't believe I read the whole thing.

to be able to read is an acquired gift that shouldn't be wasted. a lot of the world is illiterate. it not only helps build verbal skills which foster interpersonal communication and written abilities, but it teaches one about the human condition, life, and self-understanding. i think reading is a tool that one should master in order to become a student of life itself. it sparks meaningful thought and reflection.

the popularity decline in reading is merely a logical consequence of the increase in availaibility of other forms of entertainment. the Internet, videogames, movies, TV, and so forth take people's time away from reading. i think everyone should read at least something, though, because otherwise it is a waste of a wonderful resource to possess. you can travel to different worlds and learn that integration and differentiation are inverse processes through books.

Easy explanation:

Watching tv uses less brain effort than sleeping

Videogaming uses less brain effort than reading

Reading is an extremely complex activity, where you have to sit, decode symbols, make them coherent, imagine everything you have read and keep the concentration.  Many people are too lazy and reading dies in that way.

Why do you think magazines sell more than books?? Because books require a HUGE mental effort, while mags, are particulary easy.

See, magazines are just for half literate people. When you have pictures to recreate what you are reading, half of the effort made is done by watching the photo/picture, but if you get a REAL book (ie setting), you have to make your setting, your characters, your pace, your voices...

People are getting extremely lazy, and the danger in here is that reading makes you think in concepts while watching photos and videos (tv, mags) makes you think into images. That is a fundamental loss.

If any of you is really interested in this topic, you should read Homo videns: A videoculture by Giovanni Sartori. It will slap you. Danger is eminent

I read Wikipedia all the time. Don't have any time to read books leisurely because of school work, and my addiction to Gamespot, but I'll read more over the summer, though... I assume I have summer reading to do, too.

I don't see how it's boring.

Good, and small. But beware, most people when finished to read that book, get worried of watching tv as a habit. It is an extremely  important alert to the world. He even proposes a step of involution, from homo sapiens, a man who thinks in concepts to homo videns, a man who can´t think in concepts.
