The reason why they are celebrated on the same day is because a lot of companies didn't want their workers to have two consequetive days off from work

So they just said to hell with it and bundled them both together.

Granted, I have no love for the Confederacy due to what it represented, but lets not pretend that the North was some great hero. Up until the war, the North was definitely profiting from the goods produced from slaves, as they would buy the cotton and such and turn it into industrial products. Which, if I'm not mistaken, was why many were reluctant to make "freeing the slaves" a priority of the war. Not to mention when they finally did free them, it was a strategic move to rob the south of their labor force.

Putting aside the history for a moment, you can ask a begger in Mumbai this question, and they'll say, "America-South is backward!"

We don't here in the north. I saw a story on CNN that said some southerners wont carry 20's or 50's. GET OVER IT. You lost the Civil War in 1865.

roulettethedog

WTF? It takes an idiot to do that. Money is money, I live in Alabama and I don't give a damn who's on my money as long as I get my paycheck each week, granted, if you give me $100 bill I'll take that over either just because I'm less likely to spend it.

I don't buy that whole "He was anti-slavery and had to stick with his state."

If he was truly anti-slavery, he would have seen that the enslavement of an entire people is far worse than the south losing its independence.

No way would a true hero trade Freedom of a people from cruel agony for some benefits for free people.

And is the south really so bad off today?

Sure they had to come back to the U.S, but is that so bad?

You do know that the North wasn't fighting to end slavery, right, but to maintain the Union? When was the last time you took a U.S. history class?

Because despite fighting for the wrong team, he was actually a pretty cool guy and was beloved by the soldiers in both armies during the American Civil War. Lincoln offered him the command of the entire Union Army, but Lee didn't want to fight against his fellow Virginians. If he had fought for the Union, it's very likely we would have a national holiday for him too. But he didn't, so we don't.

To make the South look bad, I'm pretty ashamed of it, but it's certainly not the worst thing that could happen.

[QUOTE="thegerg"][QUOTE="BranKetra"]

Tariffs, secession, differing economies....LJS9502_basic

And what was the South's main source of revenue?

Agriculture. Keep in mind, though, that the north befitted from southern slavery just as greatly as did the south. For one to take the moral high-ground on behalf of the north when it comes to the issue of slavery is silly.

I'm aware of this. Actually, I thought I mentioned that earlier.

Because he's like the Don Mattingly of American history.
