[QUOTE="Constrobuz"]it's really not something white people will ever be able to understand. black people were enslaved and called that name during that time period. so being called that by a white person in 2007 is like reverting back to the time when black people were slaves and regarded as an inferior race, and is extremely insulting.Constrobuz

I live in Australia and white people where sent to this place as convicts for stealing a loaf of bread. when the Brits call us convicts do we get offended? No, we dress up as convicts and beat them 5-0 in the Ashes. My point i, when they call you the N word you shouldn't get offended, you should dress up in slave clothes and beat them at Basketball.

you're an idiot. if someone steals something, they ARE a convict. if someone's skin is black it does not mean they ARE an inferior race. terrible comparison.

i dont think you understood his point.
and theres no reason to call people idiots :|

It's the connatations that are brought up when it used in a offense manner. You won't be able to understand the sort of hatred and abuse felt by people who have been called that. Then there is the other use of it in things like rap, where it doesn't seem offense at all. I don't ever use it because I just remeber these pictures in my old classroom of a lynching. I don't ever think that I will be comfortable with it.

Because it's been affiliated with a race, whereas the word itself various from culture to culture....just a sign of the times, I guess.

The N word is shocking because now we 3 pages full of racist comments. It's not the skin color, folks! It's the person themselves!

IMO

it really comes down to if you respect a person or not.thats the whole thing right?i only have a couple of black friends, and they joke around and call me honkey,i joke around and call them the n word.they know i respect them, ive know them since elementary, and to be honest,i dont think weve ever even talked about our differences in race.
the other day,i was talking with a group, and there was a black guy there that i had just met.i was so used to being a able to say the n word around my friends, that it slipped out,and he got offended,i told him i didnt mean any disrespect, and i apologized,he was really cool about it,in fact we still hangout with the same group in my 1st period. if we are friends long enough so that we both know and have repsect, and trust,we will probably be comfortable with saying the n word and honkey around eachother.

but i agree with dream, dont say it if your trying to use it in the manner like your trying to offend someone.its just not cool.period.

Nobody should use it, but we have gotten to the point where pretty much every urban community and some suburban community use it so frequently it has began to loose it's shocking value whether white person says it or black. But it's gotten so bad that I think it'll be with us forever unless people loose the ignorance.

[QUOTE="dreamdude"]Don't call him an idiot when he's simply making a comparison. And how would you feel if you were shipped half way across the word to an island of convicts just for stealing a potato. Food that you couldn't afford because you lacked the money.

Black people arn't making this N word situation any better. They say we can use this word because were black and you cant because your white. That sort of like when black people were forced to address all white man by sir. This ruins the purpose of equality when one person is prohibited from saying a word because of their color.

In my opinion is black people dont want to be called it, they shouldn't say it. Either version of it.Constrobuz

i believe black people continue using the word as a way of hanging onto their culture and never forgetting that part of their history. it really is just a word and white people shouldnt worry about it since it doesnt have anything to do with them anymore.

Why remember that? I'm Irish and my family doesn't celebrate the Irish potato famine or something.

I've stopped trying to push for others to stop using the word, regardless of their race and profession. And, a professor told me something that pretty much rings true for this word. It matters not what they call you, it matters what you answer to.

Blacks love to complain about it and tell us to forget it, then make a pop record with it said 400 times per song.

The best way to forget about it is not care about it.

it's not the word but the history behind it. Whites don't have one since they were never subjugated to the same things as blacks were in the past. This is also why BET isn't looked upon as racist, but a WET would be. I personally don't care, but this is the reason.Messer_Partei

This would be a good point if my calendar said that the year was 1850 right now. I personally don't think we should prance around on eggshells just because some people choose to live in the past.

If everyone started using the n word every day in social communication it soon would no longer be considered raciast.

It depends on what you mean. I have seenwhite kids say it to each other. I have seen a white guy and a black who were friends say it to each other. But personally I don't use.

No offensive words for white people like my self. try going down South and calling every white person a cracker, or for that matter anywhere, your bound to get a response. tb254

Exactly I am black and wherelive white people react the same way to racial slurs. I don't know what it is like where the rest of you live. Personally most of the black and white people I see are cool with each other there might be a few jokes but nothing serious.

It's a racial slur, and like many racials slurs it can be offensive.

Personally, if people are really that concerned by it, stop propagating it's use. This includes the spin on the word that many black people use today. If you don't use it, it will be forgotten.

Cutlure, you call such a degrading word part of our culture. I'm black and I'm rather proud of it and I know for a fact that most young black people of this generation could care less about black history. And why should white person ignore a word their probably hearing constantly everyday from the radio or on the street.

the word is part of black culture, i dont know how you could deny that... and the fact black people dotn care about black culture doesnt really have anything to do with this discussion, it's just a sad fact.

and you answered your own question. white people shouldnt care about it because it's become such a normal thing to hear from black people.

I'm sorry you said you weren't even black but your trying to tell us about black culture like you, I find that more absurd.
