Seriously? Why the hell do we celebrate this jerk? Kids are all learning songs about him in elementary but yet hes a terrible vicious power hungry fool who started the trans america slave trade, sold native american women as sex slaves, tortured or murdered the children if they didnt bring him gold, and his crew flat out caused an epedemic killing millions. Not to mention he wasnt the one to actually discover america. Are there any actual native americans here? How do you feel that america celebrates a guy who butchered a great civilzation? Sure there is no school but is it worth it knowning we celebrate a guy like this?? Its like having Hitler day...well kinda.

I think he might have been speaking in regards to Jefferson being a slave owner, which should'nt tarnish anyone's opinion of what the man did for our country.
I think it's a very pointless "holiday" one of those that we seem to have just for the sake of having a holiday. The guys on The Sopranos seemed to take it very seriously though. Too seriously.

That was just "Old World" visitors in general. There's no way they could have possibly known about how the Native American's isolation from Europe caused them to lack immunity to the European diseases of the time. And there's no way you can hold Christopher Columbus accountable for that.

It was Lief in the early 11th century, almost half a century before Columbus did too. It sickens me that my people aren't celebrated for being the true discoverers. :(
I've never had Columbus Day off, so I've never celebrated it. I was actually kind of shocked when I first learned the truth about him. In kindergarten and first grade, I remember we used to draw and color his three boats during the fall.

Well at least you had the day off. It used to kill me when everyone else got to stay home and I didn't.:(
Anyway, yeah it doesn't make sense why he is portrayed so differently. He actually used to be my hero after I had drawn his boats so many times.:P
