The problem with movie critics is that many of them dont know how to approach a film, a lot of them approach it in such a serious way that they miss the humor in it. Every time I see a movie with somebody, they always check the reviews and if the reviews say something bad or if one person says its bad then they dont wanna see it. And when they do see it, they have a fixation that it will be bad, that when I tell them that the movie is good and to just watch it, they set their expectations to high or openply look for faults that are not important or trivial. I just read the plot of the films and ignore the reviews, and most of the time it works out well, here are some films that got bad or mediocre reviews that I liked.

eight legged freaks ( a good campy movie)

running scared ( brutal and action packed)

silent hill ( not great, but an ok game adaptation)

wind chill

the quiet earth

Some movies I have seen were great, but got horrible reviews. I think it's really your own preference that adds in the value of the movie, but some professial critics can atleast tell you if the movie was well made or not.

I've never really listened to critics or what they think of a movie.  They aren't like me.  I like silly car chase movies, shoot 'em ups and scary movies too.  I can trust gaming critics better because they can relate to what I like and vice versa.

I like what I like. I value other people's opinions to an extent, but it's what I think that's important. I'll usually only be swayed by good reviews. I wouldn't avoid a film I wanted to see because of bad ones.

I dont like many new movies.  Usually the movies I like are the ones nominated for Oscars.

I like classics like Casablanca, all Kubrick Films, Godfather, The Graduate, China Town, One Flew Over the Cooku's Nest, North by Northwest, Double Indemnity, The 3rd Man  etc.

90% of movies today total suck!  Little Miss Sunshine was very good last year though!

Do people actually make decisions based on other peoples opinions? Are people really that stupid/pathetic they can't tell if they want to see a film or not? I'm all for reviewing films to get your opinion out there but its just that, nothing more.

Maybe some, but movie reviews, like game reviews, show you if the movie was well made or not. Usually they aren't accurate but only the "stupid people" would take these reviews 100% seriously.

The critics insist on comparing films like "Land of the Dead" to deep classics. Just because I can't write a paper for film study class on it doesn't make it bad. Imagine if a hardcore shooter fan reviewed every game based on the criteria they look for in a game.  Every game that wasn't developed to satisfy them (shooters) would be shot down because it didn't hold up to a criteria it wasn't created to fit. Comedy movie doesn't have a believable plot? I could give a crap. I want to see a guy get hit in the balls and not have to think about what the director was trying to say with the scene.

Just like anyone who reviews something you need to get to know their style before they're of much value to you.  Before his recent illness I always read Rodger Ebert's reviews.  I didn't always agree but I got what I needed out of them and was entertained.  Since he has been ill I haven't been able to find a single movie reviwer that I like :(

what is so bad about the zodiac? it was a really good character based crime drama, I fail to see what is bad about it. Unless you are talking about the slasher zodiac from 2005 then yes I agree that that movie was bad.

My theory on movie reviews is that it's just filler in the entertainment section of the newspaper.  Nothing more.

yeah i know what you mean. i might read what the critics say but i don't take it to heart. i think movies don't always have to be instant classics or whatever. sometimes they're just awesome for different reasons, but critics don't always see that

It interests me what other people think about different movies, but if we disagree, I don't take it too hard.  They just have opinions, like me...people just trust them more cuz they've seen more movies.  :P

Just like video-game reviews, I use them to get an idea of what the movie was about. There are tons of things critics hate, that I actually don't mind or may even like. I never base watching a movie solely on a critics review.

like all reviews you really can't judge the review on what the score is.  Review scores are very speculative opinions that highly depend on what you value from a film.

For example: I give 300 a 9.0 on a 10 scale.  That's pure opinion.

Now if I was to review the film I'd then put my observations which can be seen as opinion but it's a much more tangable opinion.

"300 has alot of cool slow motion action scenes." now alot is based on the films I've seen before I feel 300 has more slow motion action than your average action film.  I also said these were cool which is purely opinion.  In reading this you can expect to see slow motion in the film, and that can be taken almost as a fact.

"I felt the film was as emotional as it should of been"  now here I state that this is mostly my opinion.  I hint that the director tries to pull on some emotional strings, but in my personal case he failed.

Now how I rate each success and failure comes to my final score, and most likely there's going to be people that agree w/ you and people that disagree no matter what.  The best thing to do as a critic is to help the reader explore whether they will like the film or not based on your observations.
