In some ways I find a sort of reverse thing going on. Where even pretty gross girls can easily get attention by "flaunting it" simply because they are girls.
It all goes back to the concept of how sperm is cheap and eggs are expensive. More energy goes into making eggs than sperm, and women produce fewer eggs than men produce sperm. This has the consequence that across the animal kingdom, it is usually the males that have to compete for females, not the other way artound. This happens even in species in which the females are BIGGER than the males and could pretty much just kick every male's ass and take whichever male they want. But even though a female toad can kick 100 male toad's asses, she STILL doesn't actively try to attract the male toads. It's the male toads who have to do the work attracting the females, because sperm is cheap and eggs are expenses. A male toad can continually get turned down, but the loser will ALWAYS settle for what he can get. Meanwhile the less-than-ideal female toad is still probably going to mate, because there'll be at least a few male toads who settle for the bad female toads because they can't get the good female toads. The female toad, even if she sucks as a toad, really doesn't have to do ANYTHING. All she has to do is wait, and she's gonna get some action from the loser male toads. But the loser male toad doesn't have that luxury. Female toads, even if they are nasty female toads, are NOT gonna go seeking him out. Because eggs are expensive and the female loser toad's eggs are more valuable than the male loser toad's sperm. Even if the female toad is a loser, she's STILL gonna get the loser male toads actively going after her simply because they are losers.
It's the same way with people. Take a crowded beach. Say that there are a thousand people sitting on that beach sunbathing, and that EXACTLY half of then are men and half of them are women. The good looking men and women can strip down as much as possible before being being classified as being nude, and both the man and woman will have people of the opposite sex lusting after them. Because they are desirable (at least physically) members of that sex.
Everythings fine for attractive people. If you're a good looking man OR a good looking woman, then nudity isn't a problem since you are attractive.
The difference arises when we're talking about the ugly and desperate people. Suppose that half of the women and half of the men on the beach are ugly. If we consider only the ugly people, we're now talking about 500 people (250 of each sex). Now suppose that an ugly man gets almost nude and struts in front of the beach for all to see. How many women do you think will be lusting after him? Ten? Five?
Now suppose that an equally ugly woman gets practically nude and struts across the beach. I GUARANTEE that there will be SIGNIFICANTLY more men lusting after her than there were women lusting after the ugly dude, even if the ugly/pretty distribution is EXACTLY the same across both sexes.
Search your feelings, you know this to be true. Women do not need to be as attractive as men because women do not need to be as competetive or active in seeking out a potential mate. This is why "ladies nights" are profitable at bars, and why no one hosts a "men's night". Because when a bar loses money by giving women cheap beer, they MORE than make up for it by selling more full price drinks to men who are out actively seeking mating opportunities. That simply WOULD NOT WORK with a men's night, because women have more leverage when it comes to mating rights. This is exactly the same reason why it's the male toads who piss everyone off by croaking all the time in the summer, even though the female toads are BIGGER than the males and could easily kick all the male toad's asses and pick any toad that she wants.
I totally agree and get where you are getting at here but I don't think the standards (desperation) of men and their desires to have sex is the topic here.
