So do you think there will ever be time when America completely collapses? And if so, how?

America will exist until the end of time. Eventually the entire Universe will be flying the Stars and Stripes.

Assuming we're talking about the US as a major socio-political power as opposed to the continent of North America, history has proven otherwise.

only when the rest of the world collapses, imo. But to answer your question, no, not really...we will go through some tough times then simply become #2 or whatever and some other country will be #1...if rankings are even relevant :P

It might but it probably won't be in any of our lifetimes unless something major happens. When you think about it, there countries that have existed for thousands of years. Whether or not we'll still be under the same form of government 500 years from now will have to be seen, though. A lot of the countries you see that been around that long changed their constitutions in their time of existence at least oncebut are still there in name. The China of today isn't under the same government that they had in the 40s despite the country existing since before the birth of Christ.

Barring a huge disaster (not sure if there's a modern comparison I could make toany first world country), I don't think it will in my lifetime.

Eventually, but presently, despite our economy and various other problems, we're still going fairly strong. America is a well established fountain of our modern world, its not going anywhere for awhile.

Generally, when a super power collapses, the civilized world goes with it.

I mean, Rome's collapse led to the Dark Ages :-|

As dramatic as it sounds, I can see some of the weaker points of American society becoming worse and worse and worse. Not all nations will collapse outright, but they might get absorbed or changed, so I think at some point we won't be called America anymore. What with globalization and all of that, we might become one country governed by one government. That'd be a new world...!

Wait, nevermind.

Well, only because their empire was partially absorbed by a bunch of primitive zealots. I could definitely see a scenario were America's collapse could lead to the reverse of that, as the equivalent for Rome's barbarians are actually Native Americans. Of course, they're nowhere near as militarized as Rome's successors were, perhaps a more likely scenario would be that our enourmous military comes under the control of various factions fighting for power and anyone who isn't fighting is just caught in the crossfire.

Of Course It will eventually collapse, but No, it won't lead to a new darkages... It will destabilize the worls in many ways, possibly affect the resto of the worlds goverments to... But The world is too global right now for a mass loss of Technologies and culture to happen.

I excpect America to fall into another civil war at sometime, possibly be followed by some sort of Pseudo dictator ship, but most likely the states will simply sperate apart... For sure, eventually one day the states will simply split apart, there all different places with different agendas, they can't stay unified forever.

And at that time, Canada will stand here, with its natural resources, Industrious people, and 20% of the worlds fresh water, and absorb the whole weakend lot of You all :P How does the United South of Canada sound as a province name for the US? :P :P :P
I really Really hope you guys don't take me seriously :P
I think America almost collapsed back when the Indymac Bank fiasco was going on. Had Big Bro & Company not stepped in to bail out all the failing chain of banks and their depositors of up to $250K and less, we probably would've seen more long lines of people at banks besides just at Indymac, of people waiting to withdrawl all their money only to find out the banks don't actually all the liquid to please all of their depositors. Eventually waiting in line to withdrawl will turn to waiting in line to hang bank managers by neck on lampposts. The news outbreak will trigger suspicion in depositors of other banks and the scene will be repeated across the nation until the banks are depleted in this massive run on the bank scenario.

The bailouts is just to buy a little more time before the inevitable happens, but the hole is getting deeper as we continue to drown our monetary unit in debt. And when we crash, the world will come down with us and will make the Great Depression seem like a happy playground

You guys might notice that alot of what is happening to America is similar to what was happening to Rome before it Split apart, and subsequently collapsed...

It was wasting its money on useless entertainment and costly wars... It was making dangerous enemies with other nations... It's politicians were either Inept, weak, or kept to short a term in office to do anything (Emperor being murdered every other month, for example)... There was also quite a bit of civil unrest due to the spread of New Religions and Ideas in the empire, and no one can't say that America is tottaly stable at the moment... There were also foreign attackers reaidng the Empire, maybe similar to terroists today...

Just pointing it out, of Course some of these problems don't seem quite as serious as they were to Rome..

And Rome was around during a time were changes and trends happened slowly.. We're in a Time where the fastest pace of change in the world ever know is happening, America will fall much faster than Rome... Which is also bad, because if all those Nuclear War heads fall into the hands of someone not afraid to use them... :x

It might lose its current superpower status if another war breaks out and major countries opposed to it decide to form a union against it.

But, at the current rate of nuclear warheads the US holds, it is quite unlikely.

The more you read about America in the news, the more it seems likely that there will be some drastic changes. It seems like while the rest of the western world, works to live, the U.S. lives to work.

Yes. It will at some point. As will the whole of civilisation as we know it at some point.

According to the way it happened to Rome we are already in the 'rot' and thus already declining.

If you look at historical empires there has been constant change. Yes America is great now, but it will eventually be overthrown by something greater (possibly China, possibly India, possibly Fundamentalist Islam, possibly E.T. after he phoned home). Point is that something will happen for the US to lose its sole superpower status ...

The Romans probably asked the same question about Rome. The Anchient Egyptians probably said the same about Egypt.

Over time it will become less relevant. Other countries will surpass it's influence. But later on, those countries will be annihilated in an alien invasion and it will be the US that leads the earth's resistance and ultimate victory against these alien invaders. Eventually the remaining nations of the earth will rally under the US banner and a new age of prosperity will be ushered in.

theres going to be a point at which people lose the faith in the us dollar as a reserve currency. and then investors will flee the dollar really quick. and we would see an overnight devaluation of the us dollar by at least half of its value. and at this point americans standard of living would be decimated. I would consider this a collapse. and certainly the effects in terms of riots and bankruptcys that would follow wouldn't be too rosey either.

Since nothing lasts forever, the real question is will it collapse in our life time. When you talk about collapse, are you talking about the end of America or the end of America as number 1, because those are two very different things? We've survived revolutions, civil wars, a long depression, a great depression, two world wars, who knows how many smaller wars, political incompetence and not being the number one country for most of our history. Unless there's some sort of global extinction level event, I doubt we'll be going anywhere anytime soon.

I reckon the most likely cause for America to collapse in our lifetime would be states becoming independant. Other than that, its almost impossible to say.
