Between waching the movie "Farenheight 451" and listening to instructors in the English department complain that people can't write good because no one reads books anymore, I'm really starting to think that books will be extinct soon. That's why I'm stashing all of my books in a top-secret location. Who else thinks books will be obsolete?

books will never die. The format might change but they will always exist.

School books cost more for students to buy rather than downloading the material online for free.

Therefore school books at least will always exist because it's a multi million dollar industry.

That's very unlikely, but statistics indicate that in the near future book stores may cease to exist.

I thought of the same thing. But then I realized how much words, meanings, phrases, etc......, change when you're reading stuff in the cyber-world, which many people claim is the next "format" of reading and writing. Just wait till books are titled "NOOTMGKWTIW", which translates to: "No One Older Than My Grandparents Knew What The Internet Was"

Books printed on paper may well die out within our lifetimes. As portable computers become more widespread and easy to use. I'm guessing we could soon see a portable device just for books. It would have an A5 size screen to match that of the average novel and you would turn the pages with buttons. And you would download any books you liked from the internet for a lot cheaper than a hard copy. You can already illegally download a lot of books (I don't, btw) so that will be followed soon by legal downloads, in the same way that iTunes followed Napster.

That wont happen. Those companies want to make us pay and they will do everything they can to keep the traditional paper textbooks going. You pay at least $500 or more every quarter in a college for textbooks. Why would those companies do anything that would stop the cash flow for them?

Can't argue with that. Anyway, literature isn't going anywhere. Can't be so sure about books though.

I really hope not. Reading from a computer screen is hard on my eyes. I prefer printed books by far.

No, never. In the future the books may be like 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy', but theyll still be books.

It'll probably happen, since digital books are cheaper and use less materials, but I really hope that it doesn't - I greatly prefer to read stuff that's on paper than on a screen.

In the worst case scenario, we'll give the books to monkeys.

I certainly hope not, including books on paper. I don't care how advanced we get, there's nothing like sitting down and reading a good ole' regular book. It's a symbol of society really, if you ask me, though it does disturb me that 90% of the population turns up their nose if I mention reading a book for pleasure to them (yes, I have actually been laughed at for reading for pleasure).
