I've been thinking about this. Since religion, for the most part, is reflective of the general ideas and views of a society, will religion eventually die out? I mean, it can be said that science (no, not Scientology), is our relgion. I mean, we have all these scientific theories of how we came to be, how life works, etc. These theories and facts are being taught in a good majority of our schools (not alongside the beliefs of an organized religion, might I add). We, for the most part, no longer believe in a sun god, or any other gods that represent different natural phenomenon.

American society, compared to how we were hundreds of years ago, has become more lax when it comes to relgion. I don't have to worry about being labeled as a heretic and being abused for believing something contrary to Christianity in most parts of the country.

Will religion die out eventually? If so, will some wacky new beliefs system rise up to take it's place? Is science our religion?

Discuss.

Surely that'd be religion aswell :|

People always need something to believe in; where they came from, where they are going to end up. I guess that will never change.

Religion will never die. There are too many people that can't do anything without thinking their is a higher power.

Well, it doesn't have to be. Religion is defined as being "a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny".

We could all just be raised with a strict moral code or instructions on how to live with no mention of any supernatural elements. Ya' know, kinda like Buddhism.

Please stop with the religion threads. All they do is incite heated discussions that can lead to flame wars.

I doubt you even genuinely care what people's answers are, I bet you just want to watch people argue.

Everything you blame religion for would still exist.

I don't think it will...I don't really have a reason, but it doesn't seem like something that'll just stop.  :)

This is what I always try to say in these threads; most religions promote love and peace, but the message is always corrupted by people hungry for a reason to support their evil cause. Like suicide bombers or the Crusades.

Umm, religion doesn't explain a damn thing. And, religion has caused millions of deaths.

You know those scientific accomplishments we've had in the past century? Many of those have been hinted in the Koran, and the Koran has yet to contradict Science.

It's just the damn people that abuse the fact that there are many uneducated people, teaching them the wrong ways of the Koran, promoting violence...

And if religion did die out, there would still be struggles over political power. Politics is ruining the world, not religion. The Crusades did not follow the Bible correctly, but it was for political power.

It is political power that United States is helping Israel against Lebanon, where Israel has 30 times MORE prisoners captured than Lebanon (and Israel tortures them in dungeons, very sad).

No religion will always be around until the end of the world. You can't kill religion but you can take power from it(control the government, and telling what people to believe). One reason that you can't kill religion is that there will always be extremists.

probably...

religion was used to explain things that nobody coul...like egyptian gods..we all know they arent real right??

Anybody wanna explain the different between egyptian gods and christianity??

I think its no different here...as science keeps getting better and we keep making new discoveries we wont need religion to explain stuff anymore...and it will eventually go away..

No too many people have religious views and would not be swayed even if science managed to give stone proof that God didn;t exist. Some people are just stubborn like that.

Your definition of religion is flawed.  Buddhism (for the example) has no higher power, nor does it practice anything that controls your destiny.  In fact it states that you should control it.  Its the same with some beliefs in Africa as well.

Now I hate to be a detail whore... but you are somewhat incorrect. Many forms of Buddhism, most along the Mahayana vein, do have divinities. One being the Buddha himself (Siddhartha Gautama) while many others are usually contextually sensitive to the area in which they are practiced. Even though, Gautama never intended for this to happen.

At least... that is, if I recall correctly.

Yes that is true.  But again there are the other secs of Buddhism that don't.  So by his definition, those secs are not a religion.

I dont think belief in god will die out, as it's survived as something a majority of people accept even today, with advanced science explaining an awful lot about our surroundings and history. Religion however, may die out. As it becomes outdates, as it becomes more exposed as corrupt, fewer people are interested. The church has suffered this the most, as many people now realise how detached it has become from the actual message of god that they preech.

www.quranmiracles.com

A lot of the Scientific stuff we are discovering was already hinted 1400 years ago in the Koran. Why would you want to destroy that religion? I don't want to sound like I want Islam to be the most followed religion (even though I agree with it more than the other religions), but what has Christianity done? Has the Bible helped in Science? Sure...there were also many prophesies that came true, but what about the rest of the book that has scientific errors? And Christians keep trying to argue with Scientists because their Bible says something differently...

The problem isn't exactly religion. The problem is Politics. Even when people worshipped Egyption Gods, people still fought. It's just that today war is more dangerous because of technological disasters such as nuclear weapons.

Oh, and Zionists are also a big problem. They live in the American Government, and they are going to be the reason the Middle-East will be against Israel and its allies (and..we're their allies).

I get what you're talking about, but if that were true, why don't all the atheists go around doing immoral things all the time? People can have a moral code without fear some sort of punishment or judgement after death.

And what about the law as punishment? I'd like to think that would still apply, no?

Because usually Atheist got there not form somebody preaching to them, but from thinking. So they don't go crazy or do anything bad because their smart enough to do so.

I am so sick and tired of all these ignorant idiots who keep blaming religion for every war ever fought. Some of our most catastrophic wars have had nothing to do with religion. Did WW1 have anything to do with religion? Did WW2 have anything to do with religion? How about Korea? Vietnam? Most modern wars have been fought over political ideals, resources, etc. and have had nothing to do with religion. The current war we are in right now may have religion tied into it a little, but it isn't anything like the crusades.

The world would not all of the sudden become "heaven" if religion disappeared. Their still would be strife over many other things other than religion.

Yeah, Hitler killing the jews.

Not exactly. He wasn't trying to convert them or anything. He was just using them as scapegoat to gain power. He was blaming them for some of Germany's problems. If they didn't exist, he probably would've used some other group as a scapegoat.

We can only hope religion will die out. Sadly its unlikely because even though science can eventually proove anything (in my opinion) there are so many things to find out. for every answer there are two questions. there will always be that hole in human knowledge, and people will allways try to fill it with religion.

Perhapse religion can become less important, to the point where people don't blow themselves up over it.

I don't believe the Crusades were about converting Islamics.
