Ok, I'm worried. I'm hearing things like the human race will die in like 200 years. Even though I'll probably be dead by then I would still want my Great Great Great Grand children to do ok in life. So I want to know what are your thoughts on this. Don't you think the human race has come too far to just die due to overpopulation, World Wars, global warming, or even a stupid asteroid crashing head-on into Earth? This is really SCARY:cry: atrain4

Who cares about it. Global Warming is overrated and beefed up. World Wars wont kill all of the human race, not even a quarter of it. Overpopulation cannot kill anybody??? As far as I know, we have unlimted resources for ourselfs. Its not like we are ever going to run out of food or water for atleast 2000 years, even more.

Asteroids are nothing to worry about. Earths Magnetic shield usually takes them far away from Earth. Scientists everyday are working out ways to stop Asteroids. In 20 Years I think we will have found a way to stop Asteroids, or something to make them much smaller, so it wont blow up the Earth.

Remember when they said the world is going to end when the clock hit year 2000? Remember when they said the Devil will return and kill us all in 6/6/06? Scientists have said themselfs they always like to prepare for the worst situation, not the best. So just because they say something, dosnt mean its true.

Well, maybe. But let's be clear that in geologiucal terms, "soon" tends to mean "a few million years".

We're all going to die some day of course. But let's keep in perspective that people have been forecasting the imminent extinction of humanity for pretty much as long as there have been people. Say all you want about how our wars have been out of control, and we're destroying the environment. But we've survived MUCH more catastrophic wars than anything we've seen recently. We could mess up the environment so much that civilisation as we know it ceases to exist. But as a SPECIES we've survived a lot worse.

So yeah, I think it's quite possible that the human race will die out soon. But not SOON in the way that people usually mean when they say "soon".

A few million years? That sounds reasonable.

A few thousand years? Unlikely, but I'll run with that.

Ten years from now? Hell no.

Well, if we don't die 200 years from now, that massive asteroid coming in 2052 might just do it:)

200 years? try more like 5... If you read the Mcleans aritcle, talked to some of the top scientists, and researched the prophecies of the Mayans, we're all gonne be dead in 2012...CrackThaRipper

Looks like you have got the wrong end of the stick my friend. Many Mayan Elders who are still alive today said that the 2012 date marks a New Era, a New Beginning for us Humans. Archeoligists have also done extensive research on the Mayan's and have found that the Calendar does not mark the end of the world.

People say, why does the Calendar suddenly end at 2012? It dosnt end, the Calendar just starts again. We are living in the 5th world according to the Mayans, in 2012, we will be living in the 6th. Dont listen to idiots who just assume its the end of the world because the Calendar ends in 2012. Look at it like 2012 is a new year for the Mayans, its not going to affect us.

As human knowledge of science increases, so does out endangerment. Wthing the last 100 years, we have developed weapons capable of destroying the entire Human Race in the push of a few buttons. They say that a nuclear War is most likely to start by accident. And it is one of the most probable ways the human race will reach exstinction. I think thatit's almost become inevitable for the Human Race itself to commit suicide, through mass genocideCarlos_Santana

I don't even think that nuclear war is a reasonable extinction level event.

I mean, suppose there is a global thermonuclear war. Let's keep in mind that the nukes won't be evenly dispersed all over the globe. Humans occupy a HUGE area of the world, and it's not likely that a nuclear war will result in ALL of our human settlements getting hit. If the USA launches its entire nuclear arsenal, they are all going to hit a select few countries. That we are at war with. The countries that we don't give a damn about simply don't get hit.

Now, that'd surely still have an impact on smaller no-name countries. Nuclear fallout being dispersed in the air and getting spread over the globe, loss of economic ties sustaining those countries, etc. But I seriously doubt that those problems would be so bad as to result in 100% mortality everywhere on earth.

We didn't human civilisation as a global interconnected comunity on Man. We started out as small groups of hairy dumb monkeymen. Society could collapse tomorrow. But as long as there are still people, people will revert back to being monkeymen, and they'll keep on living until they're ready to pull themselves out of caves and start being modern again.

Overpopulation cannot kill anybody???

No, but it can cause lots of rioting and radical groups who believe they have to exterminate people to stop the overcrowding and rapid resource drainage.

As far as I know, we have unlimited resources for ourselves. It's not like we are ever going to run out of food or water for at least 2000 years, even more.

We're expected to run out of oil in 50 years or so.  And if overpopulation becomes an issue, we're going to run out of food, and quite possible water.

Asteroids are nothing to worry about. Earths magnetic shield usually takes them far away from Earth.

Earth's magnetic field does jack squat to stop asteroids.  We don't have a magnetic shield.  Agreed, the big ones that we should worry about have slim chances of occuring, but chances none the less.  It's best if we eradicate any probability.  Some of the smaller ones have much better chances, though; there's a small one somewhere out there that has a 1 in 66 chance of hitting.

Scientists everyday are working out ways to stop Asteroids. In 20 Years I think we will have found a way to stop asteroids, or something to make them much smaller, so it wont blow up the Earth.

Remember when they said the world was going to end when the clock hit year 2000?

That will happen in 2039 unless we switch completely to 64-bit processors in our computer systems.

Remember when they said the Devil will return and kill us all in 6/6/06?

That's just stupid people who think special numbers (666 is incorrect anyways, the real number is now believed to have been 616 due to translation errors.  It very well could be 919 since the book of Revelations was supposedly based on a dream)  correspond to events on the calendar.  Pure superstition, no scientists or anything thought anything would happen.

Scientists have said themselves they always like to prepare for the worst situation, not the best. So just because they say something, doesn't mean its true.

well, if we dont end up kiling ourselves through war, the sun will eventually go out, so unless we can find a way to live somewhere other than earth we are doomed :D

Trust me we wont run out of food or water for a long long time. Guess why? If we ever do run out of water, we have the sea. All we need to do is collect sea water, purify it and take all the bad chemicals out. Or we can just collect lots of rain water during winter to drink. (This is only if we do run out of food or water, which we wont)

As for food. Fruits and Plants can never run out. All they need is water to help them stay alive, we can eat Fruits forever if we get that desperate. Just get grow some Fruits in your backyard, you will never run out of food then.

Purifying that much seawater is a lengthy, expensive process, and will seriously mess with the ecosystem.  Rain water is unsafe because of how much we've already polluted the atmosphere, and if you're going to melt snow, you'd better boil it.  If in large quantities, that's still an expensive process.

If overpopulation becomes an issue, there will be food riots, and people will fight, kill, and steal any food they can find, including the stuff in your backyard.  You'd have to have a large basement and very expensive hydroponics system in your basement, providing the power is still on.

In addition, most edible plants will not survive a nuclear winter/supervolcano explosion/asteroid apocalypse.  Besides, for all three of those, it would be lethal to be aboveground.  So you'd have to have an expensive, complicated system that provides power underground, circulates and filtrates air, and somehow provides freshwater for at least 100 years (in the event of global nuclear winter, 100,000 years).  Even longer in the case of an asteroid.

I'm not trying to be a pessimist and bring down your arguments, but you have to think realistically.

Did you also know that we can purify our Urine into water? In 50 years everybody will have a cheap, purifying machine in there house I suggest.

As for plants. Yes they can live in a Basement in your house. All you need is really Bright Lights down there that act as a Sun. But I dont think it will ever get to this stage in our lifetime.

That's right, water purification would be cheaper if done on a personal level, but still, where do we put the waste product?  The bad chemicals don't magically disappear, they have to go somewhere.

And overpopulation could be a problem in as little as 50 years, and that's a conservative guess.  There is going to be at least 20 billion people on earth in 2050, if things continue at their current rate.  It's crowded enough as it is, and we only have 7 billion right now.

If you actually botherd to look. Population isnt going to increase that much in the coming years. Even if there were 20 billion people in the world, we would have enough resources for everybody. Its not like we are going to run out of animals to eat. Just remember in the future we will have better technology and better ways to handle stuff. People are only allowed to have 1 baby in China, to cut population down. I think it will get to 14 billion in 2050, which isnt that bad. But trust me, I can guarntee you we will not run out of food or water for a very very long time.

Also just remember Fruits contain some water also.

Hmm here is another interesting fact.

http://environment.guardian.co.uk/water/story/0,,1996211,00.html

"In 2050 we will have 9 billion people and average income will be four times what it is today.

Sorry but looks like you were wrong. It is predicted by 2050 there will be 9 billion people on Earth. Not 20 billion. Population is increasing slightly, not rapidly.

There is nothing in our lifetimes really that will threaten the whole Human Race. A few hicups here and there, but nothing really serious. Science and the world are getting smarter and smarter everyday and are able to fix things that they couldnt before. Nothing in our lifetimes will threaten to kill all of the Human Race.

We won't die out from overpopulation. I'm sure by then there will be plenty of space colonies.

Supervolcanoes.  We can't predict when they'll erupt, and they CAN threaten the whole human race.  They've been occuring roughly every 600,000 years, and we're overdue for one by 30,000 years, which basically means it could happen again any time.  A regular volcano eruption (albeit a strong one) tens of thousands of years ago was believed to have lowered the amount of reproducing human females to as low as 30.  As for the overpopulation bit, I seriously doubt that 9 billion is the correct figure.  We have gained 5 billion people in the last 50 years, but not at an even rate.  It spiked and plateau'd in the 1970's,  and then just rose almost exponentially from there.
